Coyotes bring spread to Sweetwater
By Ben Barkley/Reporter Managing Editor

There is nothing like playing your first football game of the season at home.

That is exactly where the Sweetwater Mustangs will be when it opens the 2006 season Friday night against Wichita Falls. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

“We are glad to be here,” said head coach Kent Jackson, noting the heat and humidity in Wichita Falls is a little bit different than that of Sweetwater. “With our situation in the bowl and the crowd, it is always good to be here.”

And the Coyotes will be the first of what Jackson has called a very tough schedule for the Mus-tangs.

Why?

Wichita Falls will bring a different look to the field than in the past. New head coach Travis Pride had been the offensive coordinator of Southlake Carroll the past few years and he will be bring the Dragons' spread offense to the program.

But even though the spread is the primary offense, Jackson knows the Coyotes will be run the football as well.

During last week's scrimmage against Brownwood, Sweetwater was able to see just how much the spread has been incorporated into the offensive scheme.

Jackson said the Mustang secondary will be well tested, but will have to remain alert.

“Even though it is a spread, they will run the ball,” he said.

So what will the Mustangs have to do to keep the Wichita Falls offense in check? The answer is simple - ball control.

Jackson hopes the offense will control the clock and the line of scrimmage during the contest.

“We can do ourselves a lot of favors by moving the chains and take advantage of the chances we do have,” Jackson said. “The team that controls the clock will have the advantage.”

When it comes to ball control, Sweetwater will look to capitalize on two 1,000 yard rushers in the backfield. Joseph Banyard and Skye Green return for their senior season and will be the keys offensively, especially since the offensive line is made up of all newcomers.

In last week's scrimmage against Vernon, Banyard finished 74 yards on seven carries. Back up quarterback Thomas Holsey led the team with 94 yards on eight carries against Vernon.

Starting quarterback Duone Cun-nings added 69 yards on seven carries. Green finished with 16 yards on seven carries for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs return home next week to face Brownwood during the TSTC West Texas Sammy Baugh Classic. The Lions open the 2006 season in Abilene Friday night against Abilene Wylie. Sweetwater will host five games next week in the bowl as part of the Classic.

Good Luck Sweetwater! Hope the weather is better than last night. That 2 hour 15 min. delay was a real roid.
