this sounds like the Graham offense of last year. Then again...having a freshman QB...I bet things are going to be pretty raw in the 1st game. At least their defense has played well after the 1st series.

The defense is playing well against what is supposed to be an improved Greenwood team, and the offense seems to have moved the ball some but silly mistakes coupled with Greenwood's defensive play have kept them scoreless. With a freshman QB starting, Graham should only get better and turn into a quality team by season's end...

aww...the inflatable tunnel collapsed on the Graham team as they were coming back out at halftime. And yes...they put my youngest brother in charge. He was supposed to be the MC of the pep rally but Coach/AD McCoy decided he didn't want MC's this year...he wanted the attention to be on the football team instead of everybody getting excited about the game on Friday. So instead...Parker (my brother) went from being MC to being in charge of the tunnel crew. Needless to say, he is not the most mechanically inclined so the fact that they had a few problems is not that big of a surprise!

poor Parker....he has 3 older brothers that are going to make fun of him for it too. Last year, RMAC was the MC of the Graham pep rallies (along with a friend) and they never had trouble with the inflatable tunnel. My oldest brother was part of the guys that would run around with flags at Abilene Cooper games as well as handle things like the tunnel...and he never screwed it up. Oh well...poor Parker!

When I left, I thought that Graham for sure had this one. Case McCoy started out shaky, but had a good second half. Guy is gonna be fun to watch for the next three years.

Yeah, I wasnt thinking right. I was just thinking about the next three years after this one. It would be scary to see him in the playoffs this year, because he is going to improve greatly. I hope the McCoy's move up to 4A, cause this guy is going to lead some teams on some deep playoff runs.

Washington leads Rangers past Graham

Midland Reporter-Telegram
09/01/2006

ABILENE -- It was an impressive debut for Graham freshman quarterback Case McCoy, but it was Greenwood quarterback Michael Washington who made the big plays in the fourth quarter Thursday night at Shotwell Stadium.

Washington ran for three touchdowns and threw a key 51-yard scoring strike to Bryce Williams to lift Greenwood to a 25-15 victory over Graham in the second annual Gofridaynight.com Champions Classic that kicked off the 2006 high school football season.

Trailing 15-12 early in the fourth quarter, Washington engineered a 9-play, 95-yard scoring drive, all on the ground until Washington, using a play-action fake, hit Williams, coming out of the backfield, on a short pass over the middle. Williams outraced the Graham defense to the end zone, putting the Rangers ahead 19-15 after Logan Bawcom's extra-point kick with 7:13 remaining.

Washington then scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 1:13 left to seal the victory for Greenwood.

Despite the losing effort, McCoy, the younger brother of University of Texas freshman quarterback Colt McCoy, put up some big numbers in his first high school varsity game. McCoy completed 24 of 46 passes for 251 yards.

After a defensive first-half struggle in which Greenwood held a 6-0 lead, the two teams scored on three consecutive possessions in the third quarter.

McCoy took Graham on an eight-play, 61-yard scoring drive to open the second half, culminating in a 28-yard TD pass to Casey Cox. Brice Scott's extra-point kick gave the Steers a 7-6 lead.

Greenwood countered with a 47-yard touchdown scamper by Washington on the next possession to retake the lead at 12-7. After a pair of penalties wiped out successful PAT attempts, Washington's pass for the two-point conversion fell incomplete.

The Steers came right back on a 13-play, 56 yard scoring march. Case McCoy capped the drive with a one-yard keeper and then passed to older brother Chance McCoy for the two-point conversion to put Graham back on top 15-12.

Greenwood took the opening kickoff and drove 62 yards in 11 plays, scoring on Washington's one-yard sneak with 7:53 to go, giving the Rangers the early 6-0 lead. Logan Bawcom's extra-point kick was blocked.

The big play on the scoring drive was a third-down 24-yard pass from Washington to Dexter Shaffer, which put Greenwood in scoring position on the 16-yard line.

The rest of the first half was played between the 20s as neither team could mount a scoring threat.
