Lions display firepower in scrimmage

By Derrick Stuckly — Brownwood Bulletin

It may not have been perfect, but the Brownwood Lions had plenty of reasons to leave Gordon Wood Stadium with smiles on their faces Thursday night.

In their final tune-up before next week’s season opener against Abilene Wylie, the Lions doubled up Wichita Falls four touchdowns to two during the 80-minute controlled session, then rallied to tie the Coyotes, 14-14, in the 30-minute live scrimmage.

Head coach Steve Freeman wanted to see the Lions display the same level of intensity they showed during the Denton Guyer workout this past Saturday, and for the most part he was pleased.

“If we take a look at percentages, and there were a bunch of snaps tonight, our consistency was there except for about five or six plays,” Freeman said. “But those five or six plays ended up being negatives for us.

“Overall, though, I think we got a lot of good out of tonight.”

During the opening 20 minutes of the controlled session, the Lions first-team offense ran 26 plays and amassed 252 yards of total offense, nine first downs and three touchdowns.

Thomas Beck took the opening snap 54 yards around the left end down to the Wichita Falls 16. After a 12-yard pass from Chris Munson to Jordan Longoria, Beck finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.

Unofficially, Beck ended the night with a team-high 144 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just 10 carries.

After managing just one first down on their next series of plays, the Lions answered with two more touchdowns.

Corey Burr ran for 31 of his 66 yards on the night on the second scoring drive, while Casey Pachall hit Mason Ellis on a 37-yard pass. That set up Bronson Shaw’s 6-yard scoring reception, also coming from Pachall — who completed 11-of-17 passes for 256 yards unofficially.

Another 29-yard scamper by Beck and a 15-yard scramble from Munson set up the third Lions’ score, which was a 5-yard Munson keeper.

Unofficially, Munson was 6-of-13 for 64 yards through the air, rushed for 37 yards on three carries and caught two passes — including a 30-yard touchdown toss from Pachall during the second-team offense’s 20 minutes — for 45 yards.

“Offensively, we never did get into a power mode,” Freeman said. “We tried to go in and out and took all the quarterback exposure out of our offense and went a little vanilla.

“We started off moving it up and down the field. I think we got a little undisciplined late when we were moving the ball then we got into a penalty situation and we went into recovery mode. But I wasn’t displeased with our offense.”

Defensively, during the first-team defense’s 20-minute session Wichita Falls scored just once — that coming 12:37 into the action — after putting up six touchdowns against Midlothian last weekend.

The Coyotes were unable to sustain any drives, despite picking up modest gains of 25, 31, 29, 16 and 24 yards on passing plays. After each first down through the air, however, the Lions buckled down and forced a three-and-out and the ball was placed back at the Coyote 30.

The only other Wichita Falls touchdown during the controlled session was by the second-team offense on a 57-yard catch and run following a broken tackle.

During the 30-minute live scrimmage, the Lions needed only four plays

to get on the scoreboard. After losing two yards their first two plays, Pachall hooked up with Shaw on a 71-yard catch and run down to the Wichita Falls 6. On the very next play, Pachall took the ball into the end zone on a keeper for a 7-0 lead.

The Lions’ tackling faltered later in the scrimmage as Wichita Falls struck for touchdown passes of 44 and 70 yards to grab a 14-7 advantage.

“Defensively we held them and held them, but if they’re going to catch the ball down field, we need to make sure they are catching it in front of us where we can make the play.

“But this early in the season, to get to work against a no-huddle spread is great experience for us.”

But Pachall and Shaw again hooked up on a 53-yard pass that set up Beck’s 6-yard tying touchdown with 2:17 left.

Brownwood’s defense then held Wichita Falls on its final four plays to close out the scrimmage.

On the injury front, the Lions ended the night relatively healthy. Longoria, a linebacker/fullback, left the game with a wrist injury and did not return. The status of his injury was unknown at the end of the scrimmage.

Looks like Brownwood didn't have any trouble running the ball against WF.;)
