District 18-3A preview capsules
Tuesday, August 29, 2006
Four of the five teams were in the playoffs last season.
Hutto beat Cameron in the quarterfinals, and while the Yoemen return more starters, the Hippos have QB Jeremy Kerley from the Division II state finalists. The teams, who split in 2005, meet again in October on Friday the 13th.
Explosive Liberty Hill has gaps to fill on offense, but looks to have the edge on third place.
Cameron Yoemen
Head coach: Mike Mullins (4th season: 25-12; 11th overall: 65-44-1)
All-time: 579-303-40 since 1911
Playoff trips: 34 (43-31-3)
Last playoff game: Lost to Hutto, 35-14, in 2005 regional final
Returning: 21 lettermen, 7 offensive, 6 defensive starters
Key loss: WR Derek Evans
Outlook: The Yoemen seem poised for another deep playoff run behind star senior QB Brian Scott (6-1, 175), who rushed for 1,108 yards and passed for 1,903, accounting for 18 touchdowns each way. Cordrick Mobley, who is 6-3 and junior Thomas Limmer (6-4) are top targets.
Size and senior leadership in the offensive line should also have the Yoemen among the state’s top contenders. John Torres (6-2, 295), Eric Paluka (6-2, 245), Justin Lynch (6-3, 270) and Wade McCullin (6-3, 210) lead the way. The only junior, Nick Zajicek is 6-2, 270.
