District 18-3A preview capsules

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Four of the five teams were in the playoffs last season.

Hutto beat Cameron in the quarterfinals, and while the Yoemen return more starters, the Hippos have QB Jeremy Kerley from the Division II state finalists. The teams, who split in 2005, meet again in October on Friday the 13th.

Explosive Liberty Hill has gaps to fill on offense, but looks to have the edge on third place.

Cameron Yoemen

Head coach: Mike Mullins (4th season: 25-12; 11th overall: 65-44-1)

All-time: 579-303-40 since 1911

Playoff trips: 34 (43-31-3)

Last playoff game: Lost to Hutto, 35-14, in 2005 regional final

Returning: 21 lettermen, 7 offensive, 6 defensive starters

Key loss: WR Derek Evans

Outlook: The Yoemen seem poised for another deep playoff run behind star senior QB Brian Scott (6-1, 175), who rushed for 1,108 yards and passed for 1,903, accounting for 18 touchdowns each way. Cordrick Mobley, who is 6-3 and junior Thomas Limmer (6-4) are top targets.

Size and senior leadership in the offensive line should also have the Yoemen among the state’s top contenders. John Torres (6-2, 295), Eric Paluka (6-2, 245), Justin Lynch (6-3, 270) and Wade McCullin (6-3, 210) lead the way. The only junior, Nick Zajicek is 6-2, 270.

DT Luis Marquez, LB Alex Wright and CB DeAndre Goss are back after earning first-team all-district honors.

Rockdale Tigers

Head coach: Jeff Miller (1st season)

All-time: 433-387-25 since 1910

Playoff trips: 16 (16-15)

Last playoff game: Lost to Bellville, 24-21, in 2004 bi-district

Returning: 15 lettermen, 5 offensive, 4 defensive starters

Outlook: The Tigers are moving to an I formation but won’t stop throwing to WR/DBs Dennis Brooks and Tee Richardson, who had 63 catches for 26 yards.

QB David McCann will run the offense, with Kortlin White and Cois Walker still battling for the tailback spot.

OL/DL Julio Guzman (6-1, 255) and Austin Dodds (6-0, 260) are the line leaders. FB/LB Bobby Joe Tindle recorded 125 tackles last year.

Coach Miller inherited a brutal schedule with the Tigers. All 10 teams were playoff teams in 2005.

Cameron has 3 ties in the playoffs. 1992 against Crockett. Lost on penetrations. 1993 against Mexia. Won on Penetrations. Who was the 3rd against and what was the outcome? I was involved in the first two, but I can't remember the last one.

The Yoe Tied Newton that year and Newton had a running back named Anthony Byerly who was a stud and went on to knee injuries at UT.
