Columbus, Ga., Wins 60th Little League Baseball World Series

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Aug. 28, 2006) – Cody Walker’s two-run home run was all the offense needed today for Southeast pitcher Kyle Carter, who scattered three hits and fanned eleven as Columbus Northern Little League defeated Kawaguchi Little League of Japan, 2-1, for the 60th Little League Baseball World Series championship at Howard J. Lamade Stadium.

With the win, Kyle became the only pitcher in Little League Baseball World Series history to win four games in one series.

Asia broke on top in the third inning with a run-scoring single by Go Matsumota, bringing in Seigo Yada from second base. As a pitcher, Go was nearly as effective as Cody, giving up just three hits while striking out nine.

But Josh Lester’s single and Cody Walker’s homer put Southeast ahead for good in the bottom half of the inning.

The title is the second for a Georgia team in as many tries. East Marietta National Little League of Marietta, Ga., won the championship game 3-1 against a team from the Dominican Republic.

It also is the first time since 1992-’93 that U.S. teams have won back-to-back Little League World Series championships.

The game was to have been played on Sunday, but rain forced postponement until today. A crowd of 4,725 was on hand. The attendance for the entire 32-game series was more than 200,000.

I watched the highlights of this game. The left-handed pitcher for Georgia's last pitch was 76 mph. From 46.6 feet that's bringing it.

We got home just in time to see the final 2 outs in the 6th inning and watch the Georgia boys win it. How exciting for those young men!  I also was impressed with the Japanese team's attitude afterwards as well. All are to be congratulated

Way to go Columbus, GA! Also a team from Michigan won the little league softball world championship. A good year for the USA in little league. :)
