Can't miss matchups
Join us on an 11-week road trip through the H.S. football season

Two-a-day practices have long been over and scrimmages are done.

Now it's time to start an 11-week journey that begins Thursday night when

Gregory-Portland and King open the regular season at Buc Stadium. The playoffs are a long way off, but a close look at the schedule reveals which matchups have more meaning.

The next two and a half months are shaping up to be rather interesting.

Week 0

Cuero at Sinton

Friday, Sept. 1

Hurricane Rita's assault on the Texas coast canceled last year's game between the two Region IV powerhouses. The

Gobblers are serious contenders to win a state title, but don't think that scares the Pirates.

Week 1

Zapata at

West Oso

Friday, Sept. 8

The teams are in different districts this season, but the Bears want revenge for last year's 10-0 loss to the Hawks in a game that decided the District 31-3A championship.

Payback is payback.

Week 2

Gregory-Portland

at Carroll

Friday, Sept. 15

The annual "Battle of the Bridge"

features two of the most successful teams in South Texas. Gregory-Portland and Carroll have combined for 51 trips to the playoffs, 33 by the Wildcats and 18 by the Tigers.

Week 3

Miller at Ray

Friday, Sept. 22

Miller's move from Class 5A to 4A does little to dull a rivalry that started more than 50 years ago. The Texans still sport the candy stripe tops and the Bucs are always up for a little razzle dazzle.

Week 4

G-P at Calallen

Friday, Sept. 29

The district title is usually up for grabs when the maroon meets the red and blue. All that's on the line now are bragging rights. To these teams, that's more important than some shiny trophy.

Week 5

Three Rivers

at Refugio

Friday, Oct. 6

Eddie Hesseltine made this matchup more interesting when he left his job as an assistant at Refugio to take over the program at Three Rivers. Don't expect Chris Jones and the Bobcats to show any mercy.

Week 6

S-T at Odem

Friday, Oct. 13

The Bobcats and Owls tied for the district championship last year, but neither wants to share the title again. Skidmore-Tynan returns with more experience, something Odem won't let get in the way.

Week 7

Calallen at

Flour Bluff

Friday, Oct. 20

It's not wise to look ahead, but it's also hard to ignore what in only two years has become an intense feud. The Hornets won the district championship, but the Wildcats went on to play for the 4A Division II state title. Anticipate more fireworks this season.

Week 8

Miller at Moody

Friday, Oct. 27

Realignment knocked both the Bucs and Trojans down to 4A, putting both teams on a more even playing field as far as enrollment. At this point in the season, the former 5As could be in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Week 9

Alice at Kingsville

Friday, Nov. 3

The Coyotes and Brahmas both look forward to playing an 11th game this season. Depending on the situation, there might be room for only one. Alice came close last year, while Kingsville seeks its first postseason trip since 2001.

Week 10

Ingleside at Sinton

Friday, Oct. 10

This game is shaping up to be one of the biggest regular season finales in the area. The Mustangs return 17 total starters, but the Pirates aren't likely to give up their stranglehold on the district without a fight.
