now that 2 of my kids are in college I'm wondering how much debt the average college student has when he/she graduates ... anyone want to offer up some #s?

FYI, I was very, VERY lucky and had $0.00

$0. I worked summers and made enough to cover about a semester and a half. My parents helped me with the other half semester. :inlove:

My daughter had a vb scholarship for the first two years. After that, I paid one semester and then she qualified for financial aid. However, she did apply for a student loan this year to help out with expenses. It has to be paid back, of course. And I didn't ask how much she applied for. Didn't want to know!

I had just under 5K in school loans. I was lucky enough to pay my way through until the last year and a half. If it weren't for the wife and new baby I probably would have been one of the $0.00 gang. Although, prior to the wife and new baby I was a college dropout. I think I'll take that trade off.

3afan,

my first tow years i payed out of my pocket at a juco. however the year at a&m i had cost me 15000, then last year here in corpus it cost me roughly 8,000, plus 2000 this summer and 4,000 this year...so roughly i'll have to pay about 29,000 for 3 years of school, imagine if i hadn't gone to a juco!!!

I went to Oklahoma City University School of Law from 1988 through 1991. School, books, rent, food, utilities and misc. was around $90K. When I started it was $235.00 per hour and when I left it was $300.00 per hour. Private schools will kill you. Still paying.

I had around $11k when I graduated. Which reminds me...I consolidated my loans before July 1st but it looks like they never did it and now I have 2 variable interest rate loans that are currently at 7.8%!!! I need to call them about that today!!!

That's because our state congress decided to take the cap off of the maximum a college can charge for tuition. If my estimates are correct, Texas A&M brings in around a billion dollars per year.

I know the average cost for 1 semester (15 hours) at TxState is $6500.00 x 8 = $52,000.00

We have the first two semesters paid for thanks to some savings, a few scholarships and some generous friends/relatives at graduation...beyond the first year though, it is a scary proposition. My son working (eventually) will help, but student loans will become a necessity at some point.:(

Another thing that bothers me...now, if you exceed your degree plan hours by 20...they start charging you out-of-state tuition (double). Gives a whole meaning to not passing or dropping a class.

I can't tell you how much I am saving cause my baby got a scholarship to SFA. It is supposed to be worth $68,000. I would hate to have to pay that. Thank the Lord!

Consider yourself (extremely) fortunate. There are days where I wish my son would have focused more on books and less on sports during high school. While he still made good grades (88 .. four year average) it wasn't nearly enough to rake in the scholarships.

On the other hand, who knows, if he wouldn't have been so involved in athletics he might have been wearing those droopy pants. :D

I'm at around $3,000 as a junior right now, will probably finish up with around $25,000 through my undergrad years. Started out at community colleges, but worked my way through the first year and a half and didn't take out a loan until the Spring, when I decided to just buckle down and finish school.

I'm using loans this go-round to buy a travel trailer to live in. The interest rate's a lot better than any I'd get if I financed it myself and I'm too old to waste any more time on a go-nowhere job.

Besides, the travel trailer will go with me to my internship next summer and to grad school wherever I wind up.
