Coasting into the start of the season, it seems we have talked about many of the top teams in other classifications. In 1A, Windthorst has achieved Celina- and SLC-like excellence in 1A for several years running and they are ranked No. 1 in most pre-season polls again this season. I can understand the bigger schools with many players to choose from building "dynasties", but for a 1A school to do it year-in year-out is really an achievement.

They also rule in volleyball. They've won state something like 11 out of the last 14 years! That's just incredible. They're not even one of the largest 1A schools, just middle of the pack in size.

Don't forget their baseball program. They go deep into the playoffs every year. I think this year they lost in the third round to Gilmer-Union Hill.

For some reason, everybody always brings up Windthorst's football team, with good reason. But I doubt that few on here know about their volleyball team. I think they've won something like 11 of the last 12 state titles, or maybe it's 13 of 14, I would assume the VWG would know as he seems to be the Region I Guru, so feel free to chime in when you read this.

Windthorst Volleyball
State Champs - 1992,1993,1994,1997,1998,1999,2000,2001,2002,
2004, and 2005.

The brides maid in class 1A volleyball is Round Top Carmine. They are always in the state tournament along with Windthorst, and have won 2 state titles..... but Windthorst definitely has the advantage over them. Round Top Carmine and Windthorst ... you can almost pencil those two programs in for the volleyball state tournament every year.

And they have also been State Champions in Softball the past two seasons. One reason may be they have a continuity of their lady coaches that stay there for a long time. They are married to Dairy Farmers there so even if they were to get better offers they stay there because of their husbands' work.

You got to understand where these kids come from. Most of these kids are German ancestry. Most of them work on dairy farms, getting up at 3 or 4 in the morning, 365 days a year. They are not afraid of hard work and it definantly pays off in the sports arena

Also the parents like for the kids to be in athletics and they like to get into sports to get out of some of the work. This was brought out in a newspaper story I once read about it. ;)

Besides the volleyball state championships above they have also won state in football in 1996 and 2003 as well as softball in 2004 and 2005.

Heather Scribner who played great women's basketball at UT from 2001 to 2004 and volleyball at UT for 2005 played on the four state championships from 1997 to 2000 and was MVP for four straight years! She played on good baskeball teams there but they never did win state. She was recruited for her volleyball skills as well as basketball skills but she choose basketball because even though she liked volleyball she loved basketball and was a good player. I think her brother played qb (?) for the 2003 state championship in football and I think she has a younger sister playing currently on the volleyball team even though she may have already graduated.

Now that I think about it, I would almost be tempted to say that Windthorst has the best sports program in all of 1A.

If you decide to say it, I'd be hard pressed to argue with you. :D

Plus I think their recent enrollment was 145.5 which I think means they are a medium enrollment school in 1A.

What have they done in football over the past decade?
