Celina's ready to go

Just finished my annual preseason pow-wow with Celina coach Butch Ford (I’m eagerly awaiting my late lunch at Acapulco , my favorite Mexican food restaurant in DFW, as I write this).

Celina won its state-record tying seventh state championship a season ago. Things will be tougher as Celina moves up to Class 3A (it last competed there in 2002 and 2003) for the second time in school history. Given the population growth in the area, a drop back to 2A is unlikely.

Ford’s biggest concerns involve quarterback and linebacker.

At quarterback, juniors Seth Davis and D’Anton Lynn are vying for the starting job. Davis is the son of Celina assistant Troy Davis and Lynn’s father Anthony is a former Celina star and Dallas Cowboys running backs coach. Ford said they have more similarities than differences.
The coolest similarity? They are both left-handed.

At linebacker, Ford said senior Shane Sheffield and juniors Cody Wright and Austin Wyatt are top contenders for starting positions.

Ford added that offensive tackle Jamie Blatnick , a two-time first team all stater and Oklahoma State commitment and free safety Dru Prosser will figure heavily in Celina’s success.

Here are a few other thoughts from Ford:

On current make up of team: “I think we have a good nucleus, but we have to fill around it. Their attitude and work ethic have been really good. That’s a plus when its 106 (degrees), and it’s no fun (practicing).”

The biggest difference between moving up to 3A this time and the last time?
“We’re not thinking about it at all this time. Before it was a ‘Can we compete here or not?. I haven’t even thought about moving up to 3A this time.”

Do you think the program proved itself the last time it was in 3A?
“I think we did. I read somewhere that we barely cracked a dent in 3A the last time. The teams we lost to were pretty good (Daingerfield, Gilmer and Gainesville). Daingerfield went to the state semifinals that year. Gilmer won state the year after we lost to them and Gainesville won state the year they beat us.”

Nobody likes to hear about the same teams all the time SW07, but in Celina's case, nobody can argue with their record----they have beaten nearly all their opponents in 2 different classifications for a lot of years. That is program excellence---not overrating.

Their record is something like 110-4 in the last 7 years. With about 45 of those wins against 3a teams.

i till have a grudge against celina..after one of my best friends moved there (who was really athletic and built i might add) he said he couldnt compete with alot of those guys

Dallas Madison in the second round definitely won't make it easy for a deep run!

The UIL made a big mistake by breaking up the best district in the state for the last two years. Now Snyder plays warmups against Andrews, Greenwood and Lamesa before starting the playoffs. The regular season won't be fun like the last two years.
