Lady Mustangs open volleyball season with impressive wins

The Sweetwater Lady Mustang volleyball team opened the 2006 season with a pair of wins in a dual against Big Spring and Midland Christian Tuesday night.

Sweetwater topped Midland Christian 3-1. The match was led by Tika Smith with 14 kills and Bennie Smith with 11 kills.

The main setters in the match were Mattie Doak and Meagan Spradlin with a combined kill assist of 22.

Denise White and Hanna Kite both had three blocks in the match.

Sweetwater won the first two games - 25-20, 25-23 - then fell in the third game 18-25. The team rebounded and won the fourth set 26-24.

Against Big Spring, the Lady Mustangs were led by Tika Smith, who had 19 kills.

Bennie Smith added 10 kills.

Kite led a redeeming serving rally with several serves, two of which were service aces during the match.

Samantha Johnson also had three aces for Sweetwater.

Doak was all over the floor with two blocks and 16 kill assists.

Spradlin stepped up with 12 kill assists and two digs.

Sweetwater scored a 3-1 win over Big Spring - losing the first set 23-25, but bouncing back to score three straight wins, 25-16, 25-12, 25-23.

“It was a very impressive performance for their first matches of the season,” said coach Liz Miller of the team. “We will still have some areas to work on, but overall, I'm looking forward to a successful season.”

Sweetwater returns to action this weekend at the Abilene Tournament.
