I just figured I would make this in it's own thread instead of getting it bogged down in another thread. There are two charts. The first one is comparing the stats of each individual Rangers team that Showalter has coached (Buck 1 = 2003, Buck 2 = 2004, etc) vs the average of the 1996, 1998, and 1999 division champs. The second chart is an average of all Showalter teams vs an average of the 3 division champs teams under Johnny Oates.

A few notes. The stat column that says "XB" is a summation of 2B, 3B, and HR. Also, the numbers for 2006 are estimates based on their current stats staying at a constant rate the rest of the season.

Here are my problems with the rangers the last couple of years:
1. Despite putting up great numbers offensively (due mainly to The Ballpark), they are one of the worst teams each year, IMO, at working pitchers deep into the count. That is a very underestimated offensive category.

2. Because of the above point, they are feast or famine offensively.

3. I think the overall pitching within the organization has gotten better. There's still lots of room for improvement, but you just don't get pitching in the organization overnight. Time will tell on the youngsters.

4. While they are pretty good defensively, they make too many foolish mistakes. Eaton and Padilla getting tossed out and taxing the bullpen are perfect examples of bone-headed mistakes that contending teams just don't make.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all that come to mind right now.

Those stats would seem to support the idea that the pitching has gradually gotten better during Buck's stay.

I think they've got good young arms. Unfortunately, they are young and it takes kids some time to learn how to win in the major leagues. I have no doubt the organization is headed in the right direction; I'm just not convinced Buck is the guy to take them to the next level. Look at his track record.

The stats are somewhat misleading as the 2006 season isn't complete yet.
I think the pitching staff has improved.... but it's the overall consistency of their outings that suck. Padilla pitches one game great, then blows against the Royals. Last night he pitches the first two innings great, and then wham the Angels light him up.
Wes Littleton was due. He had a .048 ERA going into his second inning of relief..... I could go on and on, but the bottom line is the pitching has to be more consistent.
