Canadian National Soccer Team member visits Sweetwater
By Ben Barkley/Reporter Managing Editor

Sasha Andrews may not be known by many in Sweetwater, but a Sweetwater High School graduate sent her to town last week.

Andrews, who is a member of the Canadian National Soccer Team, is a friend of Willie Amos. She said Amos wanted her to visit his hometown and she did.

“The people are nice,” she said. “I really enjoy my time here.”

The trip was her second to Sweetwater and she had to let Amos' friends know how he was doing. Amos, who is a defensive back for the Chicago Bears, had knee surgery last week. He is a member of the team's practice squad and was also a member of the Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe.

For the Sea Devils, Amos started three of 10 games, recording 24 tackles, one interception, six pass break ups and six special team tackles.

Andrews and Amos met while attending the University of Neb-raska.

She is preparing for the 2008 Olympics in China and has been playing for Canada over the past few weeks. Andrews is a defender for the national team and is also a member of the Vancouver Whitecaps of the W-League.

The Edmonton native made her national team debut against Scotland in 2002. She has played in 31 international matches since that time.

During her career, Andrews has scored three goals - against Mexico (on Aug. 31, 2003, and Sept. 4, 2003) and Denmark (on May 25, 2005).

Her most recent game was against Sweden in July. She started and scored a goal against Denmark in 2005 and played against Argentina and the United States during the 2003 World Cup.

Canada is currently ranked fourth in the world when it comes to women's soccer.

Prior to joining the national team, she was a member of the under-20 national team, making her debut in 2001 against China. She scored three goals for that team - all against Mexico.
