I wonder if 2 teams from the same district have ever played for a state championship?

In '95, Judson and someone else. Roosevelt, maybe? If I remember correctly, they both won too. There's been one other instance that I know of, but I can't remember off the top of my head. Maybe Kep can help you out.

SA Roosevelt and Converse Judson in 1995

Texas City and La Marque in 1997

Marshall and Kilgore in 2004

Maybe a few more.

That's impressive, kep....How do you do that? You have records on hand or is that from memory?

That was from memory, but I did double check it before posting.

Burnet and Bandera both played for state out of the same district in 2002.

D2 Bandera 27 Greenwood 24 well ok, i thought he meant they played each other for the state title- which would be impossible

Actually, I did mean 2 teams from the same district playing each other, but technically Chris' answer would be correct without this clarification.

That would not be possible. Even before the current system was put into play...you only had 1 team make the playoffs and the playoffs went to "zones" and that was the end of it.

Well, I did say "ever", Adidas......:D

This brings up another question. Would 2 teams from the same district and division be scheduled to meet in the playoffs sometime prior to the state championship game, and therefore this pairing could not happen?

It would be possible that two teams, placed in the same district in a given alignment period, could have previously faced each other in a state championship game. I don't know that it has happened though.

Two teams from the same district have met each other in the playoffs many times since 2 teams per district were allowed into the playoffs back in 1982. In fact I think the first time it happened was in 1983 when Midland Lee beat Odessa Permian in the 5A Quarterfinals. The playoff brackets are set up so that if two teams from the same district meet, it will always be in the State Quarterfinals.... It's happened in 3A the past two years with Hutto and Cameron facing off in the Quarters last year and Sweetwater and Snyder meeting each other in the 2004 Quarterfinals.

Two teams from the same district have both won state titles the same year three different times but never in 3A so far:

1995 - Converse Judson (5A Division I) and San Antonio Roosevelt (5A Division II)

1997 - Texas City (4A Division I) and La Marque (4A Division II)

2003 - San Augustine (2A Division I) and Garrison (2A Divison II)

The "man" on such matters has spoken.....thanks WOS87. (Not that you other guys don't know your "stuff", also.)

The odds get bigger with them adding more and more teams to the playoffs. Someday maybe even all the teams will get into the playoffs. :)
