Truckload of penguins spills on E. Texas highway

MARSHALL - Motorists dodged penguins on an East Texas highway Tuesday morning after a truck carrying the flightless birds overturned.

The semitrailer truck was carrying penguins, exotic fish and birds to the Galveston Zoo when the accident happened on U.S. Highway 59, eight miles north of Marshall.

A Texas Department of Public Safety official said one penguin and all of the fish died in the accident, and three more penguins were run over by passing cars.

A DPS trooper said the truck was carrying the animals from the Indianapolis Zoo, where their exhibit space is being renovated. When the truck slipped off the road shoulder, driver Kelly Hodge tried to veer back and overcorrected, tumbling into a ditch.

The DPS official said 21 penguins survived, although some required treatment for minor injuries. A refrigerated tractor-trailer rig was summoned to pick up the survivors and take them the rest of the way.

Hodge was taken to Marshall Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Her condition wasn't known.
