CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Free agent Kevin Pittsnogle has signed a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics, his agent said Wednesday.

Will Kevin Pittsnogle ever be a useful NBA player?
Yes
No

Pittsnogle, a 6-foot-11 center who is West Virginia's career 3-point leader, was passed over in June's NBA draft along with Mountaineers teammate Mike Gansey. Both played for the Miami Heat in a summer league, and Gansey signed a two-year deal with the Heat.

Pittsnogle led the Mountaineers with 19.3 points per game last season and was named to the All-Big East first team. He led West Virginia to the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons.

"Clearly, Kevin's strength is extending defenses with his range. He's big enough and he's got a quick trigger," agent Dan Tobin said. "He's a unique player, somewhat of a specialist at this point. We're trying to expand other areas of his game and I think that's what's going to help him make the transition."

Pittsnogle made 253 career 3-pointers and his 41.1 percent 3-point accuracy rate ranks second in school history. He is sixth in career scoring with 1,708 points.

He won't do anything special in the NBA.

You can be fantastic on the offensive end. But if you can't play a lick of defense, then you are useless.

You've got to know how to play D in the NBA if you want to make a name for yourself.

Alonzo Mourning would disagree with you on the defense comment. As well as Ben Wallace.

Pittsnogle isn't going to be "dominant". He'll be alright. Dominant is for people like Shaq, Dirk, Kobe, AI, Wade, Nash....that's who I think of when the term dominant is used.

no hes not going to be. he will be a decent offensive threat, but playing 4-on-5 on the D end of the floor is going to suck.

Dirk got away with not playing defense his first 6 years in the league.

according to the sports talk shows, reason Pitsnogle dropped off the draft board is fact he is somewhat overweight. Had spare tire around his middle. Apparently loved the beer and pizza of college life.
This made scouts and GMs question his work ethic.

The kid can flat out shoot though. Thought he and his team were going to take down UT in NCAAs for most of game.

We didn't get any championships or Finals appearances during his first 6 years either.

So technically, he didn't get away with it. ;)

Pittnogle will be a useful NBA player from the get-go. Sure his defense and footwork suck, but his range extends beyond the NBA 3-point line and he has the softest touch around the basket of any of the incoming rookies (HEAR THAT, LAMARCUS AND TYRUS?!?!).

Ben Wallace is only useful on the defensive end of the court. Pittsnogle can do the same on the offensive. Maybe not as well, but he'll find a spot somewhere...

...oh, and remember that Kendrick Perkins, Theo Ratliff, Brian Grant, Mike Olowokandi, and Al Jefferson are all bullies under the boards, so Pittsnogle will fit nicely into that rotation. They're going to have to get rid of one or two guys on the inside, and I doubt the two youngsters (Perkins and Jefferson) are going anywhere. Neither is the second-best defensive center in the league. I could honestly see them cutting DeWayne Jones, Kandi and Grant to make room for Pittnogle and the change of pace he gives them. He can open up the lane even better than Dirk.

Long shot at best. But he can shoot...and that's valuable.

He has the ability to be a great role player on a good team. He should be that 7th, 8th or 9th guy on the bench that has one roll. He will stand out on the three point line and bury threes. In the process, he will keep another team's power forward away from the basket, opening the lane for the rest of the team.

You dont have to be able to play defense to have a nice NBA career. Being tall and able to shoot well and over anyone can keep you in the league for a long time. Just ask Sam Perkins, Matt Bullard, Cliff Robinson & Bob Horry.

Exactly. Granted, Robinson and Horry learned to play defense (or at least be crafty on D) as they got older, but I think he'd be a great change of pace for a team like the Celtics.

He's a role player, yes.

He's not going to "dominate"...no.

If he could play defense, he wouldn't have to rely on being just a role player. But I really don't think he cares with the paychecks he'll be getting...which is more than any of us make.
