The Gainesville Leopards defeated the Tyler Chapel Hill Bulldogs 61-39 Saturday in the Class 3A Region II championship game at Texas A&M-Commerce. The win qualifies the Leopards for the state tournament in Austin beginning Thursday.
Chapel Hill led 17-12 after the first quarter, but Gainesville (21-6) came back to take a 4-point lead at halftime. The Leopards took a 7-point advantage into the fourth period and put the game away in the last 8 minutes, outscoring the Bulldogs 18-3.
Justin Peters led GHS with 14 points, Darcel McBath added 13, Brandon Manuel scored 12, Marcus Thomas had 6, Herman Atkins added 5, Jeremy Franklin scored 4, Chris Brown had 3, and Courtney Royal and Maurice McBath each added 2.
The Leopards will be making their fourth trip to Austin in the past fve years. They won the state title in 2002.
