Transportation officials are advising drivers to avoid a section of South Padre Island Drive near the Crosstown Expressway interchange starting Friday night because of a 24-hour road closure.

Traffic will be diverted to frontage roads during the closure, which starts at 7 p.m. Friday. Eastbound and westbound traffic on SPID will be closed between Kostoryz Road and Greenwood Drive, and northbound and southbound lanes of the Crosstown Expressway will be closed between the interchange and Gollihar Road.

"If drivers can avoid that area completely, they should," said Cliff Bost, spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation.

The closure will allow crews to hang new overhead signs using several cranes, and to do pavement repairs to the highway.

"Some of the signs span the entire highway, so we have to close both sides to hang the signs safely," Bost said.

A section of the Crossover Expressway extension between Holly Road and Oso Creek will be opened to traffic today.

that's near my work, good thing they are doing it on the weekend, although sometimes i wonder what would be more beneficial, doing it on the weekend, or not
