i have wanted to get a few things for my father-in-law. maybe for Christmas or his next b-day. what i had in mind was a bayonet lug and bayonet for his M1 Carbine. as i was researching it, i was curious as to the firepower of the gun. i dont know a whole lot about guns, but i was curious as to how it compares to say a 30-06 or a 30-30
here is the info on a standard m1 .30 Caliber Carbine:

Weight unloaded: 5 lb 7 oz (2.48 kg)
Barrel: 18 in. 4 grooves, right hand twist

Muzzle: velocity 1990 fps, 967 ft-lbs.
Rate of Fire: M2 on full auto, 650-700rpm
300 yds: 1035 fps, 262 ft-lbs
Ammunition: 108 gr bullet, 13 gr charge, US Service M1
Effective Range: 300 yds

I own a 1943 IBM M-1 carbine. Absolutely love it. If I had to pick just one to take to the ranch, this would be it.

Mine is one that was armory refurbed just after the war. Shoots like a dream... can emphasize that enough. And accurate as heck.

Sure, it doesn't have near the stopping power of the Garand or 03... but I love it!

for more info, check out www.fulton-armory.com/

They have been my first choice in help on my Garand, 03 Springfield and Carbine.

Btw, All three of them are a blast to shoot!

Not gunna help out pirate here but I'll agree with cdlvj on the 30.06 and 270... I use a 270... 270's and 30.06's (and the 300 I believe along with 'maybe' the 7 mil) are very good rifles for their energy and accuracy after 300 or so yards... they're accurate and deadly at long range, that what makes them so special...

Take your 6 mil, 308 (I think, I get the 300 and 308 confused because one of 'em isn't as powerful as the number is high) and .243 and you are very accurate at a long distance, however the deer/pig/whatever may turn around and laugh at you because they are not very deadly at too long of a range (I'd say 350 yards maybe?)... but from the space you're firing from and on to about 300 yards the .243's are perfect...

I chose a .270 because one of the places I hunt at offers me about a 450+ yard shot...

30-30s, though? They're good up close, have some kick but they're brush ammunition, won't kill too far past 150 yards from what I hear...

I dont know that I'd use it to hunt with, but none the less, would like to own one. The manuf. and date are usually stamped on WWII era guns somewhere on the barrel. I have a Brit. 303, and I believe it was from 43.

.
I love my 30-30. It's good to about 200 yards with the scope I have on it. And yes I did kill a hog at about 200 yards. :)
.
I have fired a friend's British 303 plenty of times. Nice gun.
