I'm about to go fill up. The increase is due to the war in Lebanon which has pushed oil prices to $78 a barrel - an increase of $3 in three days

I tanked up yesterday. I'm lucky my truck gets 20 mpg, but it still costs a lot to fill up that 34 gallon gas tank; diesel was $2.71 per gallon. :(

They have this new Saturn out, I think it's called the Ion or something like that, and it looks pretty sweet.

I've seen that. It's built on the same platform as the Pontiac Solstice, and I love the Solstice.

All my friends make fun of me, though. They think it's a girl car. But that Saturn looks a little more masculine.

You have good taste in cars my friend. I personally like the Solstice, but I think the Saturn version looks better, at least the grille does. I'd definately drive either one of them.

I lied, it's a Saturn Sky, and it definately looks better than a Pontiac Solstice.

I agree, and they're both in the $20K range and get great gas mileage.

My only knock on the car is you can't get it in a 6-speed. I'm used to driving a 6-speed because that is what's in my truck...a 5-speed just doesn't feel the same to me.

$30 at the pump is a lot easier to stomach than $60!

Oh, and FoFo, I'm driving 55 (max) on this tank of gas to see how much more I can get out of a tank. Looks a little better so far...

Have you documented much of a difference in driving 55 vs 60 or 65?

about a difference of about 2mpg from 60 and 55. havent tried 65 yet. on a typical gallon of gas though, i normally have to drive 75 at least for 1 stretch of 30 miles. 90% of my miles are highway miles

I'm noticing my needle is starting to fall fast just like it always does... so, I don't think 55 is going to make any difference in this car. :(

sorry bout that. at least you can drive fast. the only way i'll get 31 mpg is to drive 55. thats the gas milage shown on the window sticker when i bought it. i could never get 31 until i learned i'd have to drive 55. :(

a $3 increase in a barrel of oil will increase gas prices approximately $.15...not $.40. For every $1 increase in world oil prices, you see about a $.05 increase in domestic gas prices.

They find ways to make extra profit, Adidas.

BTW, our gas prices did not go up 40 cents...yet, but they have gone up 3 or 4 cents every day now.

I wish I could say the same. Coming into Austin on 35 from the south, I get my doors blown off when I'm running 70. I never see anyone running 55 out that way. I dont think it would be a bad idea to run 55 to save gas, but I'm afraid it would cause alot traffic jams as well.

They have to. There have been plenty of times when they made little to no profit. Once the price of oil gets below about $13/barrel, then the oil production companies are losing money on every barrel of oil that they produce. It's funny because you never see consumers griping during the times when gas was cheap even though the oil companies were losing money and jobs. I don't think I ever heard anybody say, "Ya know...it's just not fair that we are paying $.90/gallon for gas when the oil industry is losing money and people are losing their jobs. Let's go ahead and raise the price up to $1.75 so that they can make some money too."

I know, and I have lots of connections to the oil business so I know what they are going through.

But it sure would be nice if the price was $1.75 :D

true...true...

What sucks for me is growing up my dad (a petroleum engineer) would always tell us, "Boys I can provide a lot more for when oil is at $60/barrel than at $6/barrel." Well sure enough...I'm now out of college and on my own...and then oil prices spike right about when I graduated!!!

Maybe if our congressmen & senators drove there own cars to work everyday instead of the limo rides and paid for there own gas they would come back to the real world and face this sh%% something might get down when they use there own money they don't like that they want the lobbyest to pay for everything thats both parties.

When I was in high school, gas averaged a little over 50 cents a gallon. And we thought we had it bad, because a few years before that, it was 29 cents.

All hell broke loose on the Arab-Israeli front in 1973 and caused the 'rabs to embargo the U.S. for propping up Israel. Unlike the 6-Day War of 1967, that one began to go somewhat badly for the Israelis and it looked like they might have to break out the nukes as they went down. So President Nixon conducted a huge airlift of military equipment to them and they turned it around.

That's the only time the Arabs have ever done that because it backfired. It caused the U.S. to examine, if only for a few years until prices went down, alternative sources of energy.

Ever since then it's been the U.S. refusing to buy from the "bad guy of the hour" which has varied from Libya to Iran to Iraq depending on the era. But it doesn't matter since not everyone agrees when we designate a "bad guy" and other countries buy from them anyway. Trading in oil is a worldwide market.

Gas will never go back to $2 a gallon for a reason that is little discussed or understood. And that is that the Federal Reserve, our unelected private central bank, has created so many trillions of dollars since 2001 trying to prop up the collapsing economy that the U.S. dollar has been steadily losing value. The more dollars the bankers create out of thin air, the less value each individual dollar has.

There are other factors, such as geopolitics and increasing demand, but I thought I'd point out this main factor which you don't hear about as often. Our central bank, the Fed, is trying to inflate its way out of a depression. The bankers see no way to prevent some sort of revolution otherwise. There have been hanging parties for bankers throughout history.

As the largest debtor nation in history, inflation works to the U.S.'s benefit as the trillions the government and corporations have borrowed from abroad can be paid back in cheaper dollars.
