Got this from the Leopards website, i thought it would spark some conversation...
It might have just been a scrimmage, but the Gainesville Leopards
football team gave their fans reason for optimism Saturday by outscoring
the Forney Jackrabbits 4-1 in a controlled scrimmage at Allen High
School.
The Leopards actually scored five touchdowns, but one of them was called
back by a penalty.
Both teams had to battle the midday heat as temperatures on the
artificial surface pushed past 110 degrees.
The two schools' freshman teams scrimmaged for an hour, followed by the
a mixture of series by the varsity and junior varsity.
New Leopards head coach Jeff Cordell said he was pleased with how his
team looked against highly-ranked Forney, but not ready to declare his
team state champions just yet.
"I think at times we looked good, but I think there is a lot of work we
still have to get done both offensively and defensively," he said. "But
it's a good start for us. We have a new staff and new kids at various
positions, so it was nice to be able to evaluate us against somebody
else. Now we can kind of gauge and see where we are at."
In the varsity scrimmage, Forney started on offense first, running 12
plays. The Jackrabbits moved the ball down to the Leopard 15-yard line,
but the GHS defense held on fourth down to end the series. Making big
plays for Gainesville were Amos Davidson, Luke Smallwood, Jeremy
Franklin and Shawn Thomas.
On Gainesville's first offensive series, it didn't take long for the
Leopards to get in the end zone. Quarterback Chris Brown connected with
Berryman on a 75-yard TD pass, but an illegal block penalty brought it
back.
After the penalty, the Leopards still moved the ball. Brown passed to
Berryman for 15 yards. Brown also had a 10-yard run to get the ball to
midfield. Later, a 14-yard pass from Brown to Courtney Royal moved the
ball to the Forney 28. Two plays later, Brown hit Royal for a 28-yard TD
pass.
When Forney got the ball back, the Leopard defense kept them from
picking up a first down in 12 plays. Spencer Flint and Andrew Mentis
both had big tackles for loss.
The Leopards second team offense scored when they took the field.
Quarterback Luke Smallwood had a 70 yard run to move the ball down to
the 6-yard line. Two players later, quarterback Travis Sutton scored
from 3 yards out. Also in the series, tailback Andrew Mentis had a
25-yard run.
The Rabbits finally got in the end zone on their next offensive series.
They used a 37-yard run to move the ball into GHS territory. They also
converted a fourth down play at the Gainesville 18 to keep the drive
going. They finally scored on a 3-yard run. Colt Eberhart and Amos
Davidson each had big tackles for the Leopards.
Gainesville's offense got that score back when they took the field.
Terrius Purvey had a 15-yard run, Brown threw 41 yards over the middle
to Marcus Thomas who made an outstanding catch. Mentis added a 15-yard
run, then Brown connected with Darcel McBath in the corner of the end
zone for a 17-yard score.
Forney only managed one first down on their last offensive series and
that came on a 22-yard pass.
On Gainesville's final offensive series, Purvey had a 35-yard run.
Smallwood then hit Jordan Turbeville for a 36-yard touchdown pass.
Later, Purvey added a 15-yard run, and Sutton threw to Cody Brewer for
12 yards.
The GHS offensive line did an outstanding job of giving the Leopard
quarterbacks time to throw. Daniel Brennan, Chase Beam, Jeremy Hinkle,
Clint Stoffels and Robert Westbrook were among those who played well.
Cordell saw plenty of good play from this team.
"I think Chris Brown really did an exceptional job for us at
quarterback," the coach said. "That is something that we're counting on
from him. Clint Stoffels is someone that we needed to know if he could
do it as a sophomore on varsity and he went out there and showed that he
can go out there against those big boys."
