This should be a great race the 2nd half of the season

Francisco Liriano- Minnesota----10-1, 1.83 era, 102 K
Jered Weaver- Anaheim---- soon to be 6-0, 1.12 era
Jonathan Papelbon-Boston----26 saves

I'd give the edge to Liriano, he may be the first Rookie Cy Young winner since Fernando in 1981

Liriano has a wicked slider. Watched him pitch tonight on tv.. very impressed.

I'd say Liriano if he finishes like he started. Closers rarely win
Cy Young's. But, seeing Papelbon's name makes me mad. I
drafted Keith Foulke high in my fantasy baseball league and if
you don't know...he was the closer for Boston last year...not
Papelbon.

I'd throw Justin Verlander into that race as well, has 10 wins for the Detroit Tigers as the 5th man in the rotation.

You could conceivably have 2 rookies with 20 wins and the other with 45 saves.

Verlander, at 3.01 has the AL's 4th best era, behind Liriano, Johan Santana and John Lackey. In an ordinary year, he'd be the prohibitive favorite, but Liriano's numbers are off the charts. In addition, he spent the first month and a half of the season in the bullpen. 9 of his 10 wins have come since being moved into the rotation on May 19.

The Twins have been playing outstanding baseball lately, going something like 23-3 but only gaining 2 games in the standings because Detroit is playing so well, plus they have the defending World Champions in between them and the Tigers:eek:
