Played in a softball tournament this past weekend, there was a small town team there playing who consisted of 3 coaches and players past and present....just wondering...

I'm not sure I understand...

did the coaches for sure 'take' them to the tournament or did some come with parents etc...?

I'm not sure on the rules but let's hope the coaches didn't buy them dinner? or maybe in summer time it doesn't matter (because currently the kids are not in school so they are not a memeber of any UIL sanctioned event)... then again coaches hired by schools can't coach their school's 7 on 7 during the summer either...

UIL confuses me...

junior high and highschool coaches cannot coach their athletes in the summer outside of a camp they are allowed to coach for those young to those entering 9th grade

When in doubt, the answer is probably No.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the answer is no.

See that's what I was thinking... so maybe this town does rhyme with Filmer...

But what were they doing in panther power's neck of the woods playing softball? The way gas prices are I dunno if I'd haul kids that far for a summer softball deal unless of course the UIL pays for your gas...

It's definetely ok if your town's name has "lake" in it and the high school rhymes with ferrell

HS coaches can coach summer league and have up to 6 players I believe for baseball. If this was a recreational SOFTBALL tournament like I think it is then I don't believe that there could be anything found wrong. That would be like a coach getting in trouble for taking a church youth group that contained several members of his team to Six Flags. Not only that, but it would be pretty petty of someone to even bother to report this to the UIL.

HS coaches CANNOT coach their own athletes in a summer league!

Wait a minute, they can coach summer recreational sports, I know that for a fact, I've seen it go on out in the wide-open (newspapers etc...)

That's not true at all. They can't coach their own players.

A softball coach can coach a summer team that has no more than 2 of his/her high school players on it.

wasnt either of those towns, 3 coaches 2 played with the team and coached while one other simply coached. I know some of the kids and that's why I asked, I don't know them personally but recognized them. and they came in 2 vehicles.....a van and a truck....???

Just looked at UIL website and I think my prior post is incorrect. I know that it used to be that a softball / baseball coach could coach no more than 6 players from his/her own school and then that was changed to 2, but now with the summer camps -- I can't tell from reading the C&CR. Have to look more in depth a little later.

"UIL riles restrict school team sport coaches in grades 7-12 from interacting with student-athletes in grades 7-12 from their attendance zone in non school activities. School coaches are prohibited from providing transportation for student-athletes to non-school activites, or from providing instriction during the off-season except for allowable off-season programs during the school day."

if they are under seventh grade then they are not considered a "school athlete" A junior high or HS coach can coach little league all they want
