This stage was yesterday (Tuesday) and it was won by Matthias Kessler of Germany. It was popular because he led the race the day before but was swallowed by the sprinters with about 50 meters to go but today he made good his escape.
One of the tour favorites Alejandro Valverde had to pull out of the race because of a crash which is a shame but that happens in the Tour de France. I know Lance Armstrong had several close calls during his seven year reign.

Right now Tom Boonen is in first place but others are right behind him including American George Hincipie in third. Of the top five places Hincipie is the best bet to win the tour but there are many that are right behind them and the race has a long ways to go.
