Lou Gehrig. Without a doubt.

Took a page out of Michael Jordan's book and decided on the number 2 back in junior high. Wore that number in every sport I ever played from then on.

MJ wore number 23 because he wanted to be half as good as his older brother (remember when he made his first comeback and wore the number 45?). I wore the number two because my goal was to be half the man that Gehrig was. If I could work half as hard, have half his dedication, and have half of his character, I'd be an alright guy.

No offense intended. But, when I read this it looked more like
a "Which name doesn't belong here?" question...

Chris Mullin?

he's prob. my all-time fav. athlete. read up on his life. his college career was one of the greatest ever. he had amazing numbers in the nba even thought he was slow. he fought/ and is fighting alcoholism. there are a lot of reasons, but i wont force you to put him down as your favorite athlete

He was a HOF-caliber player who's just been forgotten. Him and Mark Price were lethal... both the cornerstones of playoff teams throughout the 80's and early-90's. Mullin was also a member of the original Dream Team, and if you saw the guys on that team you know that it's no small feat.

Michael Jordan
Magic Johnson
Hakeem Olajuwon
Patrick Ewing
David Robinson
Larry Bird
Charles Barkley
Clyde Drexler
John Stockton
Karl Malone
Scottie Pippen
CHRIS MULLIN

Price, Stockton, and Mullin were the last wave of dominant white guys.

No, those other 3 have legendary reputations. I just don't
hear or know that much about Mullin. I mean I know he played
for Golden St. and that's about it. That doesn't mean he is not
worthy.:D

There will never be a team like this again...
Todays "superstars" are afraid of injury so they pass on the
olympics and world Championships.

I still can't get over the fact that Christian Laettner was on this team
and Isiah Thomas wasn't.

this team was amazing to watch. i saw Mullin leading a fast break and instead of scoring, tossing it up against the glass for a Jordan (i think) dunk. that superstar rich team was totally selfless and "team" oriented. greatest collection of NBA talent of all time

Yeah, some stupid rule that forced them to put a college player on the team. Isaiah was just shafted the whole way around. The rumor always was that it was either him or Jordan... that they absolutely refused to play each other.

It's the same stupid rule that allowed them to be eligible for the Olympics, period. Without at least one non-professional athlete on the team, the team would be considered entirely professional and therefore could not compete in the Olympics. It's the way other countries were getting around the rule for years.

He may have been, but I always thought he got passed over for the team long before they ever started playing.

Now you got me thinking... I'll look into it.

No. But, Chuck Daly coached this team. He didn't choose him for
the team. Another rumor was he didn't choose him cuz he didn't
want his superstar getting injured.

Chuck Daly was coaching the Pistons at the time.

I found this on the first webpage I googled... I'll keep looking. I'm almost positive I remember something about an injury. When you brought it up, it started coming back.

The missteps of athletes like Jordan and O'Neal are ignored or completely excised from our collective memories — who talks about Jordan's backdoor deal to have Isaiah Thomas removed from the Olympic Dream Team link (http://www.popmatters.com/columns/hill/050829.shtml)
