Stone Cold Steve Austin at the Saltgrass steakhouse in SA, I-10 and DeZevala a few years ago.

Met the Dixie Chicks a little while before Natalie Maines joined the group.

Tim Brown was a good friend of one of my friends, met him a few times.

Drove by David Robinson in a Mercedes convertible on I-10 in SA in 92... he had to duck to get his face behind the windshield.

Shook hands with Mack Brown a couple of years ago...

Never met him but one of my friends went to college at Mizzou with Brad Pitt for a while. They were drinking buddies and said he was just a regular guy. Said they met a few years ago and said he was to use his words "just not right." Hopefully becoming a father has been good for him.

Met Walt Garrison outside the Astrodome when I was like 9 years old. I always thought he was big until I saw him again in the 1980's. That guy was only about 5'10", 180lbs, but it was 180lbs of pure dee tough! My dad was the HC at Lewisville when he was a soph in high school and had to give him pops once. I think it was stealing opponents jerseys on an out of town trip. LOL!

In one week at the Westin in Dallas I was in an elevator w/ Rocket Ismale (sp) and Joey Galloway. I didn't even know it was them until my dad told me after we got off. Then when I was by myself I met Johny Knoxville and Stevo and they actually talked to me. I didn't realize it was them b/c it was just when Jackass had started airing. We talked and they were like: "do you watch the show?" and I said yeah, you know, just being cool, even though I was like 13. Then Knoxville was like: "Watch it next time you can, you'll see us on it." I guess they were pretty proud to be on MTV. Looks like they did okay.

I met Jim Rome on one of his "Tour Stops" here in Houston.

I met Tony Dorsett, Drew Pearson, and Tony Hill of the Dallas Cowboys when their hoops team played a benefit at Calallen in 1982 or 83.

Sammy Kershaw used to own a dry cleaners in my hometown.....before he became big. He used to tell us he was going to 'make it' (in the music world) and we would laugh at him thinking he was joking! He would buy beer for a bunch of us when we were seniors...a couple of things I won't mention details on though....He is in my senior yearbook falling off a donkey at the FFA Donkey Basketball game.

My uncle sat and talked to Brad Pitt for hours one evening (while he was filming a movie in Broken Bow. OK)...My mother's maiden name was Pitt...my great grandfather and either Brad Pitt's grandfather or great grandfather were cousins....I don't think Brad knows we are related...but I would like to let him know :) ;) .

I learned to play golf from Arnold Palmer at the grand opening of the Palmer Course at LaCantera, SA, TX back in March of 2001.

Hung out with David Robinson at his house in SA once back in 2001. Antonio Daniels, Derrick Dial, Steve Kerr, and Timmy D were there, too.

I used to hang out with Drew Brees just about every time he came down. Went fishing many times. Caught a buzz more often than we caught fish. His grandfather is coaching great Ray Akins of Gregory-Portland HS.

Hung out with Randy White (ex-Cowboys' DL) at the grand opening of Clear Channel wireless in Corpus about six years ago. We talked for a good 30 minutes or so.

Met Tug McGraw (Tim McGraw's dad, ex-Phillies' RP) down in Corpus about six years ago.

Met Shaq after a game in the 2001 Western Conference Finals. Interviewed him, then wound up at the same club in SA afterwards. Funny as hell... I can't say much bad about him after hanging out for an hour or two.

Helped get a TV show/website on its feet by tapping a couple of my producer's buddies, Ronnie and Frankie. We hung out a few times, drank a time or two, and went to a few concerts together. Ronnie is better known to everyone else as Baby Beesh (I think he's gone to Baby Bash now..."Suga, Suga how'd you get so flyyy") and Frankie is better-known as Frankie J.

While hosting that TV show, met, and hung out with, Lil' Flip.

AB Quintanilla (Selena's dad).

Drank a couple times with Freddy Fender.

Hung out with Billy Joe Shaver on the steps in front of the general store at Luckenbach a few years ago.

One of my good friends dated Roger Creager's sister. By default, we all wound up hanging out with Roger a couple of times.

Hung out with Bruce Robison, Charlie Robison, and Jack Ingram downtown Corpus at various times.

One of my best friends is good buddies with Brandon Rhyder. I've lived through my friend vicariously, and even got to hang out with Brandon once at Dr. Rockit's down in Corpus.

Met Colin Powell at a convention for my mom's hospital about 7 or 8 years ago.

Met Carolyn Keeton Strayhorn, Rick Perry, Star Locke, and Chris Bell at various conventions. (All are TX gubernatorial candidates this year)

Met Carlos Moya and Martina Hingis at the HEB Tennis Courts in Corpus.

Saw (didn't really meet, but was within 5 feet of him) ex-President George Bush and wife at Academy up here in College Station back in '03.

Hung out with Larry Joe Taylor more than once at both Lovett's Bar and the Back Porch down in Port Aransas.

Served George Strait once at Trout Street in Port Aransas.

Went backstage with the Bellamy Brothers at the Cattleman's Ball in Papalote, TX back in 1999. I also met Troy Aikman and ex-Cowboys' Special Teams Coach Joe Avezzano there.

Hung out with a young, pretty, blonde, country singer named Miranda Lambert at the Aransas Pass Shrimporee in 2002. Even took her on one of the rides. She was young back then, but she has a great family that really looks out for her. I recently heard one of her songs on the radio, so she's 'big' to me.

Wrote about, and wound up developing a friendship with, TCU defensive end Tommy Blake during my days at the newspaper in Aransas Pass. He used to come up to my church when I'd open it up every Thursday and Saturday night and hoop it up for pickups games. He's a 'celebrity' to me.

Former UT Offensive Coordinator and A&M Head Coach Emory Bellard. Inventor of the Wishbone offense. His first head coaching gig was in Ingleside, and he's down here all the time.

Could've got a phone number from Sean Berry's (ex-Astros 3B) "step-daughter" (sort of) back in 1996. But my balls were the size of peanuts back then and I let her walk out of the stadium without asking for her phone number. Got a kiss on the cheek, though, and my little brother (who was 11 at the time) got a hug.

Hung out with Justin Warren (Aggies' LB) several times last year. Preseason All-Big XII for 2006. My roommate's best friend was dating him at the time... he came over and knocked a few back with me a couple of times.

I'm sure there are more, I just can't remember any of them right now. If I think of some more tomorrow, I'll let you know.

Between the college paper, channel 10 (you know all about KraZTV, Jeff), and the Ingleside/Aransas paper i met quite a few "famous" people. I guess you could include TX senator Carlos Truan in that group.

As far as Moya and Hingis, HEB used to have this one, big exhibition (called the Legends, or Living Legends, or something Legends) where they'd invite a couple of big tennis stars to play every year. Moya came just after his big surgery, and Hingis came right before she became the big tennis star she is today. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure Moya was playing Jim Courier... or maybe it was John McEnroe. I forget.

Whomever it was, I probably met him briefly, but it was nothing but a, "I'm Russell, nice to meet you."

Nolan Ryan - here in Abilene when I was younger...part of either building/renovating ceremony at ACU's Cructcher Scott Field.

Pat Green - too many times...hung out with him @ Floores this weekend before and after his show.

Andre Agassi - he was playing tennis in Abilene.

John McEnroe and/or Jimmy Connors - 1995 in Corpus Christi...same thing that BDR was talking about. I was there for the first exhibition match they had. I can't remember who played in it.

Ted Nugent - Abuelo's in Abilene. He eats there a lot during hunting season.

Gary Allan - sat next to him on a flight back from Palm Springs to Dallas. A sold out flight...and I'm the only person that recognizes him and then I end up sitting next to him. He's a really nice guy.

Joe Avezzano - his son owns a bar in Lower Greenville called Suede. You can find him there most nights with his wife...and often behind the bar serving drinks.

Adrian Griffin, Darrell Armstrong, and somebody else off the Mavs (I can't remember) - they were all at the AAC one night during a Stars regular season game. I ran into them at one of the restaurants/bars.

I've met a few other people...but I've gotta take care of some housekeeping stuff at work so I'll write more later...

I forgot, I know just about every TV personality in Corpus. I used to hang out with one of the girls from KRIS (the NBC affiliate) who worked under Mack the Hack. Mack moved from the northeast down to Corpus, she was on her way up. She works in Bristol, CN now as an anchor on ESPN news. She's not really all that famous (just like most of my 'celebrities'), but I've seen her on Sports Center several times. Her name is Cara Capuano.

Bob Lilly
Lee Roy Jordan
Rick Trevino
Ric Renner
Freddy Fender
Nolan Ryan
Ken Griffey Jr (he's not very personable, btw)
Craig Biggio
Kenny Rogers, the pitcher

But here's the one I'll tell the story of...

Edsel Ford
I was on vacation in Kansas City and we took a tour of this riverboat they have that they actually pulled up off the bottom of the Missouri River and restored. Well, in our tour group was none other than Edsel Ford. They ended up giving our group an extended tour of the boat, including a lot of parts normally closed to the public, because Edsel was curious. But looking back at it, it was fun. Met most of them through my five years in the media. First year was the student paper at Del Mar College down in CC. Next year and a half was at the CBS television affiliate down there, then a couple years at my hometown newspaper. Also hosted a little TV show that covered underground music across the state... that's where I met most of the musicians.

Me? No one. My fiancee however has met all of N'Sync, the entire Austin NBA D League team (Coach was finals MVP for the Celtics), and least of all David Robinson. He took his film to her and Target and asked how long it would take to get it developed in their ONE HOUR PHOTO lab.

Edit: She was also very good friends with former Longhorn Cedric Griffin in high school.

We spent a 4 day long weekend in Houston in the mid-80's and ate breakfast with Billy Sims and his wife. He was so gracious and we had a good time at the pool etc with them later that day (my older boys were 7 and 5 then) In June 1999, we were in the SA airport heading to Tampa and we were in line behind Sam Cassell (sp) and his wife? @ Starbucks. I assume he'd been in town to watch the Spurs the night before and the both looked ROUGH.. (it was a 7:00AM flight) Ate @ MOO MOO Fried Chicken in Victoria with Billy Gibbons in 1973. Got Gene Stallings autograph @ the old El Patio(where Don Bravo is now) in Cuero in the last 60's. hhmm all my encounters involve food..... :p

I've been alive a pretty good while and I have met many famous people from time to time, but the most familiar associations with famous people were the following:

Cliff Harris- Was in same Company, E12, during Army basic training at Ft. Polk, La.

Norm Bulaich- In same fraternity pledge class at TCU.

I've met several over the years through my work in the media (KSBJ Radio in Houston and KTFA in Beaumont). Here are the ones I remember:

Sports figures:
George Foreman (my wife tutored one of his sons)
Morgan Ensberg
Adam Everett
Lance Berkman
Chris Burke
Drayton McClane
Bruce Matthews
Van Chancellor (I like listening to his Mississippi accent)
David Carr
Bill Yeomann
My brother in law - Jay Canizaro - played with Barry Bonds for a few years on the Giants roster.

Over the last few years I've gotten to know the wives of some of these men. Lance Berkman's wife and Morgan Ensberg's wife in particular are really fun people.

My wife's aunt was once proposed to by Bum Phillips when they were in high school (not a joke). She turned him down. This same lady was among the first graduating class of women at Texas A&M and married a millionaire.

My first star-struck experience was jogging through the tunnel at the Astrodome next to Kenny Burroughs of the Houston Oilers back in the mid 70's.

About 15 years ago, I played in a charity basketball game with other members of the media vs. some Houston Oilers players. I scored 5 points and nearly blocked a shot from Chris Dishman. Not bad for a 5'7" white guy.

TV Celebrities:
John Tesh (recording artist and former host of "Entertainment Tonight")
Demond Wilson (played Lamont on "Sanford & Son")
Lisa Whelchel (played Blair on "The Facts of Life" TV show)
Willie Ames (from "Eight Is Enough")

Recording Industry:
John Elephante (former lead singer of Kansas)
Jars of Clay
Amy Grant
Jaci Velasquez
Stacie Orrico
DC Talk
Mercy Me
Phil Keaggy (the greatest guitar player alive IMO)
Steven Curtis Chapman
Yolanda Adams
Michael W. Smith

When I was a youngster, my family once stayed at a Holiday Inn in San Antonio where the O'Jay's (of "Love Train" fame) were staying.

My mother was good friends with the first wife of Bobby Kimball - lead singer of Toto.

A few years ago, I was working backstage at a concert when President Bush Sr. walked through. I reached out to shake his hand and said, "Thanks for raising a good son." He responded, "Barb and I are proud of him."

Oh, I forgot that I was once a celebrity in Freer, San Diego, Robstown, Falfurrias, Agua Dulce, Ben Bolt, Benavides, Hebbronville, Polito Blanco, etc. down that way. All those towns out in the middle of nowhere, 30-75 miles southwest of Corpus.

For everyone who didn't have cable, Channel 10 was the only TV station they could pick up. Everytime I drove through town, everyone knew who I was. Sad thing is that most of the people in my hometown (only 20 miles north of CC) had no clue I was working for the TV station.

So I know me.

My biggest claim to a celebrity would have to be the time, many years ago, that I was in down town San Antonio, I opened a door to the hotel I had a meeting at, and Red McCombs about knocked me down, then he cleared his throat and spit a lugie (sp) on the ground, missing the toe of my high heels by about 1/4 inch! Later that nite on the evening news, I found out that he had just had an explosive meeting with Coach Larry Brown. I have loved the Spurs ever since. :D :D :D

not really in the same area as others, but in 79 I met Gen. Omar Bradley (sp) I got to sit with him for several hours and listen to the stories that he told about WW2 and Gen. Patton. He was already pretty ill when I was able to meet him.... but he still had that command presence in him...and just the information that he had. I believe he passed away in 1981. In my mind he was one of our last great military leaders.

Okay, here's my list, but it's not too impressive. Most of the athletes I met when I worked for the Olympic Committee, and most of the pols I met when I worked in the school president's press box at Texas Tech:

Rick Perry
George and Barbara Bush
U.S. Rep Kika dela Garza
Ann Richards
Evander Holyfield
Tony Danza
Trent Dimas (Olympic gymnast/gold medalist)
Tim Daggett (Olympic gymnast/"""""")
Oscar de la Hoya
Dan Majerle (played for Phoenix Suns)
Michael Jackson (No, not that one...the one that played basketball for Georgetown Univ. in the late '80s and then played pro ball for awhile)
Mark Henry (Olympic weightlifter and WWF wrestler)
Charlie Robison (it's a long story)
Dominique Daws, Dominique Marcineau, Kerri Strug, Shannon Miller, etc., rest of US Women's gymnastic team
(FYI: those gymnasts, both male and female, are really, REALLY short---much shorter than they look on television. AND all of the girls sound like squeaky mice when they talk, but they have the muscles of NFL lineman. Put it all together and it's a really wierd package.)

Okay, here's a funny story about Mark Henry:

The US Weightlifting team ordered their competition shoes from Adidas in Germany. They sent a list of required sizes and, because Mark Henry's foot is so bizarrely huge and defies an actual shoe size, they traced his foot on a piece of 11x17 in. paper and sent it along with the order, asking that a pair of shoes be made to fit that outline. The order was sent to USW headquarters, and everyone's shoes were there except for Mark's. So they called Adidas and asked if Mark's shoes would be sent in a separate order. The Germans at the Adidas factory thought that the drawing sent was a joke and had posted the paper on the bulletin board in their breakroom, as in "look at what those crazy Americans sent us..." before taking it down and throwing it away. So Mark had to wait an additional 3 or 4 months while they resent a drawing of his foot and made his freaky-sized shoes.

Just an odd story, and what I remember most about him. That, and the fact that the town of silsbee was one of his monetary sponsors at the Olympic Training Center.
