i went to the beach (Mustang Island, access road #2) saturday. i have a question for anyone in the know. i found a bunch of living sand dollars after digging on one of the sand bars. i know it's their breeding season, and with the low tide it was very easy to find them. my question is, is it legal to take them home and "process" them? i know they sale at the gift shops for $1 and more depending on the size. i was not in a state park or the national seashore at the time.

I know you can't take shrimp out of their estuaries (sp?) etc... and you can't take a pregnant blue-crab etc...

have no clue about the sand-dollars

We used to take them live, when I was a kid, and put them in an aquarium with salt water we brought from the beach. They'd live for a few days. We would break them apart for the "angels" or "doves" that ran along the spine of the sand dollar. We did this after they were set out for for awhile to dry out the whole exoskeleton. :nerd:
Their must be billions of sand dollars around, I doubt they are regulated.

well, im not saying i did, but if i WERE to take them home,i would soak them in bleach over night. by morning they were..would be white and all those hairy things had fallen off. they looked as good as the ones youd find in a gift shop. ;)

I'm not saying I HAVE, but if I WERE to bleach them, I WOULD also lay them out in the sun.

I HAVE HEARD this works really well.:)
