Most Valuable Player

Trey Hernandez, Robstown, jr

Hernandez had a huge year as a hitter and pitcher for the District 31-4A champion Cotton Pickers, who broke Calallen's four-year stranglehold on the title. He hit .540, scored 31 runs, drove in 50 and also led the area with 10 home runs. In 100 at-bats, Hernandez struck out only eight times. The Most Valuable Player in 31-4A posted a 9-2 record on the mound with a 1.63 ERA and 79 strikeouts

pitcher of the Year

Danny Grande, Moody, sr

The decision to remain at Moody paid off for both Grande and the Trojans. The third arm in the rotation for two years, Grande went 12-2 in leading Moody back to the Class 5A state tournament. His final numbers included an ERA of 0.90 and 136 strikeouts in 93 innings. Now set to pitch for the University of Oklahoma, Grande went 6-0 as a sophomore and 8-0 as a junior to finish with an all-time mark of 26-2

Newcomer of the Year

Josh Rodriguez, Sinton, fr

Judging by the job Rodriguez did in his first varsity season, Sinton coach Gene Kasprzyk has a lot to look forward to. Rodriguez took advantage of his opportunity, going 12-0 as a pitcher before taking the loss in an 8-6 setback to Falfurrias in the Region IV-3A championship series. The Freshman of the Year in 30-3A, Rodriguez posted a .451 batting average and finished with a 1.19 ERA

Coach of the Year

David Salinas, Falfurrias

After waiting 13 years for a return to the state tournament, the Falfurrias native guided the Jerseys back to the final four for the third time in school history. Falfurrias defeated Abilene Wylie 5-2 in the Class 3A semifinals before losing to Texarkana Liberty-Eylau 2-1 in the championship game at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock. The Jerseys finished 29-7 and return six starters that combined for a .370 average

First Team

PITCHER

Ryan Duke, Calallen, jr

Although a second straight 4A state championship eluded the Wildcats, Duke turned in another impressive performance. He went 11-3 in 13 starts with 12 complete games, four of those shutouts. Duke also registered one of the team's four no-hitters. He led the pitching staff with a 1.80 ERA and 145 strikeouts in earning first-team all-district honors. Also the starting shortstop, Duke hit .376 and led the team with 54 runs scored while driving in 44

Sean Hoelscher, Calallen, jr

Opposing hitters had little success when Hoelscher was on the mound for the Wildcats. The first-team all-district selection went 11-3 record in 13 starts to help the Wildcats reach the Region IV-4A championship game. He posted three shutouts and two of the team's four no-hitters, finishing with a 2.59 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 78.1 innings. Hoelscher also led the team with a .446 average, drove in 36 runs and scored 39

Gabriel Morales, Moody, so

The lack of varsity experience didn't prevent the co-Newcomer of the Year in 28-5A from taking the No. 2 spot in the rotation. Morales finished 8-2 with a 2.80 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 55 innings for the state semifinalist Trojans. He had six complete games in 10 starts, one of those a no-hitter against San Antonio MacArthur in the second round of the playoffs. Morales also hit .363 with 27 RBI and 17 runs scored

Gilbert Vela, Falfurrias, sr

The Most Valuable Player in 31-3A had a lot to do Falfurrias making it back to the state tournament for the first time since 1993. The staff ace, Vela went 10-2 with nine complete games in 13 starts. He posted a 0.85 ERA and 119 strikeouts with 24 walks in 84.1 innings. Vela went 2-1 with a 0.97 ERA and 31 strikeouts in the playoffs. As a hitter, he went 15 for 37 to finish with a .405 avg

CATCHER

Reese Forest, Falfurrias, sr

A first-team all-district pick in 31-3A, Forest gave the Jerseys a solid presence behind the plate during the team's run to the state tournament. He logged the team's second most at-bats (105 in 129 plate appearances) and finished with a .362 average. Although Forest scored only 11 runs, he ranked second in RBI with 38. Also a first baseman, Forest tied for the team lead in doubles with 12 and reached on an error seven times.

FIRST BASE

Bucky Bryant, Calallen, sr

A first-team all-district selection in 31-4A, Bryant played a pivotal role in Calallen's run to the Region IV championship game. Also an outfielder, he finished with a .359 batting average, drove in 33 runs and scored 34. Bryant was second on the team with five home runs and was successful on all nine stolen base attempts. He also turned in the team's second best fielding percentage (.963) and was second in putouts with 149

SECOND BASE

Ramsey Gonzalez, Moody, sr

Gonzalez nearly ended his high school career the way it started - with a state championship. One of only four players left from Moody's 2004 state championship team, Gonzalez helped the program to its ninth appearance in the final four. The first-team all-district pick hit .395 as the leadoff batter, leading the team with 38 runs scored. Gonzalez drove in 25 runs and also ranked second with 10 doubles. As a pitcher, he went 4-0 with a 0.88 ERA and 18 strikeouts in six starts

THIRD BASE

Trey Crain, Ray, sr

Now that he's done at Ray, Crain is preparing to continue his career with 2003 College World Series champion Rice. The Most Valuable Player in 28-5A hit .427, drove in 40 runs and scored 39 in his final high school season. Crain also stole 15 bases. Of his 47 hits, 20 went for doubles, while another four ended up as home runs. Crain made a verbal commitment to Rice in September and signed with the Owls two months later

SHORTSTOP

Daniel Ramirez, Sinton, sr

A multi-dimensional player, Ramirez was greatly responsible for Sinton's run to the Region IV-3A finals. The Senior of the Year in 30-3A anchored the infield with this defense, but it wasn't the extent of his contributions. As the staff ace, Ramirez went 11-2 with a 0.81 ERA and three shutouts for the Pirates, who came up a round short of a seventh trip to the state tournament. He went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBI in his final game

OUTFIELD

Jason Garcia, Falfurrias, jr

A force at the plate, Garcia earned co-Offensive Player of the Year honors in 31-3A after leading the Jerseys with a .455 average. He also contributed 19 RBI and 30 runs scored. The team's top hitter in the playoffs, which ended with a 2-1 loss to Texarkana Liberty-Eylau in the state title game, Garcia hit .425 with 10 runs scored and five RBI. Five of his 17 hits in the postseason went for doubles. Garcia also fashioned an 8-3 record, 2.08 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 65.1 innings

Eric Silvas, Falfurrias, jr

A unanimous first-team all-district 31-3A outfielder, Silvas came up big for Falfurrias throughout the season. He ranked second with a .410 batting average and third with 36 RBI. Silvas also scored 30 times, which tied for third best on the team. The last of his eight doubles drove in two runs that helped lift the Jerseys to a 5-2 victory over Abilene Wylie in the state semifinals at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock

Jacob Perales, Moody, jr

The first-team all-district 28-5A selection did more than his share in helping Moody back to the state tournament for the ninth time and fourth appearance since 2000. Perales hit .368 and tied for the team lead in RBI with 31. One of two players with four home runs, Perales ranked second with nine doubles and third with 26 runs scored. He was one of four players with three triples and led the team with 25 walks

Steven Vidaurri, Calallen, jr

One of only two unanimous first-team 31-4A selections in the outfield, Vidaurri had a knack for driving in runs. He set the school record for RBI in a season with 55 and also led the team with eight home runs in helping the Wildcats to the Region IV championship game. His 19 doubles ranked second in South Texas and marked the second best season total at Calallen. More than half of his total hits (29 of 52) went for extra bases

UTILITY

Ruben Cisneros, Falfurrias, jr

The unanimous first-team all-district 31-3A second baseman did it all for the Jerseys. At the plate, Cisneros hit .354 with 29 runs scored and 21 RBI. He struck out only nine times in 96 at-bats, walked 10 times and reached on an error 11 times. Cisneros raised his averaged to .367 in the playoffs. He also went 6-0 as a pitcher, including three victories in the playoffs

DESIGNATED HITTER

Robert Robles, Moody, sr

A true designated hitter, Robles led Moody with a .435 batting average as the Trojans returned to the state tournament for the third time in four years. He tied for the team lead in RBI with 31 and ranked second with 28 runs scored. Batting from the left side of the plate, Robles led the team with 11 doubles. Wow, that's pretty impressive for a freshman. Any of you Sinton posters know if he was the #2 or #3 pitcher. I was assuming that Alaniz was #2.

You can have the last name Alaniz, live in Sinton, and not pitch?
