Jarrett's rent arrangement with Leinarts violated rulesESPN.com news services

By living in a apartment with Matt Leinart last season and not paying half of the rent, USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett violated NCAA rules, but he should be eligible to play this fall.

The NCAA determined that Jarrett violated the "extra benefits" rule and will have to apply for reinstatement, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his former residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans.

Leinart -- the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in NFL draft -- and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Times. Leinart's father paid the difference

"The information submitted by the University of Southern California regarding the living arrangements of two football student-athletes represents a violation of NCAA extra benefit rules," the NCAA said in a statement reported by the Times.

Coach Pete Carroll said he expected the receiver to be reinstated.

"He won't lose a game," Carroll told the Times.

University compliance officials looked into whether the football program received an unfair advantage and consulted with the NCAA. While Bob Leinart would have been allowed to make up the difference for his son, he might not have been allowed to do so for another player.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

So Leinart's dad paid for Lee's rent?

NCAA has some of the stupidest rules.

To me Dallas is expensive but for that kind of money you can get a 2 bed/2 bath apartment anywhere in Uptown except for maybe the W that is being built next to the AAC...and those you have to buy not rent.

you could recruit players and have boosters pay their rent at the swankiest spots in town. It is a good rule.

Screw the apt. You could get a house.

With a 12 month lease, that's near $48,000.
