Yet another example of the dwindling population base problem with West Texas football programs. Wheeler has won several 1A state championships, and was in the state 1Asemi's as recently as 1999. See link to Amarillo-Globe sports article. Wheeler to go 6-man in 2004 (http://www.panhandlesports.com/stories/102803/foo_swan.shtml)

It isn't just a 1A problem. Another good article from the Amarillo paper is Sunset on West Texas football? (http://www.panhandlesports.com/stories/082801/pig_sunset.shtml)

Boy, I just feel sooo cheerful thinking about it. But I guess Wheeler might be a terror in 6-man.

I heard that Crowell may go 6 man. If that is so then there will be 4 six man teams within 30 minutes of Vernon in District 5 AAA.

West Texas is and will continue to have problems keeping teams in higher classifications. The only way to avoid it is consolidating schools. There has been talk about this in some areas that very small schools are only 10-15 miles apart.
Look at the 3A schools like Bowie, Childress, Pecos,Ballinger, even Breckenridge with dwindling enrollments. It will be very interesting to see how the new UIL alignment comes out, because if there are so many 5A schools growing there has to be a ton of small west texas schools that are shrinking.

Throckmorton, north of Abilene, is dropping to 6man also. Man, Wheeler used to kick some tail!
