Marlin crushes Newton, 37-7, to keep rolling

LUFKIN — What was supposed to be a Class 3A Division II area playoff showdown turned into a mismatch as the Marlin Bulldogs had their way with the Newton Eagles in a 37-7 blowout at Abe Martin Stadium Saturday night.

Marlin held Newton to 114 total yards on the night, while the Eagles never found a way to slow down the Bulldogs' offensive attack.

Marlin (8-4) built a 23-7 halftime lead and scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to eliminate any possibility of a Newton comeback.

Marlin was led by sophomore quarterback Jeremy Sanders, who threw for 114 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for another 106, including a 52-yard touchdown run.

Red Richardson hauled in four passes for 53 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Marlin got on the board less than a minute into the game as it took advantage of good field position after a Braxton Hill recovered a Newton fumble. Two plays later, Sanders found Richardson in the end zone for a 15-yard score and a 7-0 lead.

Newton (10-2) evened the game after Marlin muffed a punt deep in its own territory. Joe McLemore hit Kedrin Seastrunk for a nine-yard touchdown that tied the game 7-7.

However, Marlin took over from there, getting a touchdown catch from Richardson and TD runs from Sanders, D'Nerian Wrighter and LaMondria Williams to pull away.

Marlin advances to play La Grange in the regional semifinals next week at a site and time to be determined.

WITH A WIN OVER NEWTON WITHOUT TANK SMITH THIS GIVES THE BULLDOGS ALOT OF CONFIDENCE THAT THEY DIDT HAVE EARLY IN THE SEASON. TANK WAS SIDELINE NEARLY ALL OF THE GAME SATURDAY BECAUSE OF A REACCURING KNEE INJURY

Marlin is loaded, and if they play with the emotion they had Saturday, they will not be stopped in the DII bracket. Good luck Marlin.
