(story from C.C. Caller Times newspaper

Roger Clemens is coming out of retirement for the third time, agreeing to a $22 million contract to pitch for the Houston Astros for the rest of 2006.

The Astros announced at a news conference Wednesday.

Clemens is agreeing first to a minor league contract that pays $322,000 over the five-month minor league season, and his first start is likely to be at Lexington, Ky., the Class A team where his oldest son, Koby, plays.

His second start is scheduled for June 11 in Corpus Christi with the Class AA affiliate Hooks. The Hooks meet the San Antonio Missions for a 6:05 p.m. start. On June 16, Clemens would move to Round Rock to pitch for the Express.

When he is added to the major league roster, he gets a one-year contract worth $22,000,022 — his uniform number is 22. Because he won’t be playing the full season, he gets only a prorated percentage of that, which would come to about $12.25 million if he rejoins Houston in late June. The tentative goal is to have him start against the Minnesota Twins on June 22 — if he’s put on the big league roster on that day, he would earn $12,632,307.

Do you realize that he will make more money than most TEACHERS in the State make in a year, after he throws just 3 pitches. I like Clemens, but come on. Surely he is donating some to charity, etc... My friends who teach for a living can not even afford insurance for their families. Where are our priorities headed?

United States has never been a socialist country. let him make whatever he can get. he doesnt owe teachers a dime for his talent. the astros dont owe teachers anything. they are providing something that spectators and advertisers pay for. i keep buildings from falling on peoples heads and feel i could use a raise and cheaper health care. but roger, the astros or anybody else dont owe me anything.

How many lives does Clemens or other pro athletes touch in a positive way compared to that of a teacher or coach. Never mentioned socialism. You are right, everyone deserves a raise. In my opinion we are putting pro athletes on a pedestal that they do not deserve. Yes they are talented, yes fun to watch, yes brings in dollars for many, but you are telling me that one person can make $22 million for throwing a ball and our state and country for that matter can not take care of itself??? Priorities, where are they? That was the original question. And, if you have never been into a classroom to watch what goes on, you should take the time.

not everyone deserves a raise. and theres a whole "apple / orange" thing going on. baseball isnt a government run entity. public schools are.

You are correct, apples to oranges. I was just showing a point that I feel we are getting out of control with all of these high priced salaries. Ricky Williams has been banned from the NFL, still can play in Canada and make millions. Makes no sense when we have people starving in our own country. Yes these are hard to compare, probably should not, but man it ticks me off to see this happen.

Ricky Williams' talents and abilities are in greater demand than that of a bum on the street. Thus he can charge a higher price!
