HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros announced today that team mascot, Junction Jack, has decided to enter The Methodist Hospital Weight Management Center. Through a series of hand signals and pantomimes, Junction Jack communicated that he "wants to look and feel better" and "lose a few extra pounds".
Junction Jack officially begins the Weight Management Center Medical Weight Management Program with a pre-game "weigh in" tomorrow night (Saturday, May 13) prior to the Astros 6:05 p.m. game versus the Colorado Rockies. On Sunday, May 21, the "new and improved" Junction Jack will be revealed to the world prior to the Astros 1:05 p.m. game with the Texas Rangers.

At every game throughout the homestand, the Astros will follow the progress of Junction Jack's efforts to lose weight with a nightly in-game vignette on the Minute Maid Park Smart Vision Board. In each "episode" Junction Jack will learn about another aspect of the weight management program such as the counseling and nutritional support he will receive, how to make healthy food choices, and the importance of exercising.

"When we got the call, we were more than willing to help Junction Jack look and feel better," said Kathie Nelson, Weight Management Center Manager. "When we find a patient who really makes a commitment to lose weight, we support and encourage them, even if he's an eight-foot-tall bunny rabbit."

"The entire Astros organization applauds Junction Jack for wanting to become a healthier mascot," said Marian Harper, Astros Vice President of Community Development. "It's nice to see Junction Jack - a public figure and role model so many children look up to - decide to take positive steps to become more physically fit."

The Methodist Hospital Weight Management Center is Houston's only truly comprehensive weight loss institution. The center offers a medically supervised program, bariatric surgery and medical nutrition therapy.
