Well, I've been doing it the honest way
and continually get clobbered with exceeding the salary cap and cap penalties.

best suggestion. Sign every player to the max contract (7 years) and put forth massive (but not ridiculous) signing bonus to maximize your cap space. Only do this for players that you intend to keep for the long run. The key here though is after 3 to 4 years go back and restructure their contracts for another 7 years to push the giant pay day back until they retire.

I'm not sure if you can turn the salary cap off once you have started your franchise though.
