Am I the only one who wonders why Coach K isn't considered for "Coach of the Year" more often?
I know the guys are good but someone has to manage the season...

Bull Butter
05-27-2006, 07:10 PM
Unfortunately, those awards almost never go to someone who's team is good year in and year out. Coach K does a hell of a job in Sinton, but since they are successful on a yearly basis, the coach sort of gets overlooked. Unfair as it may be.

I agree. But it just doesn't seem right for one who could probably pick any school in Texas to Coach at(and teach at... he's that good too.)
We have been blessed to have someone like him here for so long.

Great Game and Way to go Pirates!
You would have had to have been there to have seen the "Questioned Calls."
Great effort by Halletsville too and congratulations the the Brahmas for a great season and good luck in 2A next year.

Ump's calls don't go the Pirates' way - but game, series do
By Lee Goddard Caller-Times
May 28, 2006

VICTORIA - Twice the Sinton baseball team had runs taken away by umpiring decisions, but twice the Pirates got runs in return from the generosity of Hallettsville.

Sinton survived a pair of calls that went against it, and the Pirates benefited from a controversial - but apparently correct - decision that helped them take Game 2 of the Class 3A regional semifinal into extra innings.

With the help of two unearned runs - including one in the top of the ninth inning - Sinton defeated the Brahmas 3-2 in nine innings at Riverside Park.

Combined with a 5-4 Game 1 victory Thursday, the Game 2 triumph allows the Pirates (28-8) to advance to their fourth regional final in five years  , where they'll face Falfurrias in a South Texas showdown. Arrangements have not yet been set for the regional final.

That series might not have been possible but for a seventh-inning call that went against Hallettsville.

With Sinton holding a 2-1 lead and in control for much of the contest, the Brahmas (24-10) had runners on second and third with one out. Pirates starter Josh Rodriguez recorded an out to set up the drama.

R.J. Delarosa hit a chopper up the middle into centerfield. One run scored, and pinch runner Trent Skelton raced home from second with the potential game-ending run.

Isaac Rendon's throw from center, very slightly on the third-base side of the home, beat Skelton to the plate on a hop. Skelton tried to dodge the tag as catcher Justin Moreno gathered the ball and whipped his mitt by Skelton's back when the runner slid into the plate.

Skelton was ruled out. He said something to the umpire and was tossed out of the game, as the contest went to extra innings.

"I did tag him," Moreno said. "I was more worried about the hop and getting the ball. I didn't get much of him, but I got him."

Despite Skelton's protests, and the pleas of Hallettsville's first base coach, Brahmas coach Jim Appelt concurred with the call.

"From my position (from third base), I thought the catcher did get him on the back," Appelt said. "Otherwise, I would have questioned the call a lot more. I saw him tag him.

"I thought we would score. I didn't think the center fielder would make a throw like that. But you have to hand it to them - they made the throw."

After that, Sinton couldn't get the breaks. An apparent go-ahead, two-out RBI double in the top of eighth by Daniel Ramirez, who had a solo home run in the second to start the scoring, was nullified. The umpire ruled Ramirez stepped out of the batter's box to get the hit, making Ramirez the inning's third out.

A Pirates squeeze play in the ninth also was overturned. It appeared Moreno successfully bunted in Andres Alaniz from third but, after an umpire's conference, the play was ruled a foul tip, third-strike out, and the runner sent back to third.

"We have resilient kids," Sinton coach Gene Kasprzyk said. "We tried not to get too animated about all that. I felt like those are the kinds of calls you make or don't make that reverse situations and take runs off the board.

"I think, if anything, it gave us the impetus that we've got to do this ourselves. We aren't getting any help, and I don't mean that in a bad way. We just have to make things go our way."

Actually, help was on the way. Robert Dunlap, the batter after Moreno, lofted a shot to deep left. The ball landed in - then bounced out - of Justin Barnes' glove, letting Alaniz score the winning run.

It was the Brahmas' fifth error of the game. In the sixth, Allen Cantu boarded when a fly ball he hit was dropped. Later in the inning, Homer Trevino singled home Cantu.

The game was Rodriguez' to finish. Over the course of nine innings, he struck out 10. Rodriguez stumbled slightly in the sixth and seventh, but he was strong in extra innings.

Staked to the 3-2 lead, Rodriguez retired Hallettsville in order in the bottom of the ninth to push the Pirates back to the regional final.
