Since we have the guitar player thread...I wanted to include a drummer thread as well. Having spent a significant portion of my life as a full-time percussionist (high school and college just happened to be there too! ;) )...this is something that I enjoy talking about. Obviously, this thread is just talking about people that played drums in a band and not various other forms of percussion. IMO, you can find some phenomenally talented people in the percussion world that look down on a lot of well known drum set players.

NOTE: If you seriously try to include Lars Ulrich...then you're man card is revoked. If you are a woman and vote for him...then that's just plain weird!

I'll throw a few names out there to begin...

Carter Beauford - Dave Matthews Band
Dave Weckl - Dave Weckl Band
Buddy Rich - arguably the greatest jazz drummer of all time...had his own band but played with all of the best performers in the world.

I believe that Rick Allen, drummer for Def Leppard, single-handedly whips them all.

John Bonham
Neil Peart
Keith Moon - on the Who's "Live at Leeds" album about 10 minutes into the My Generation medley he launches into a part where you'd swear there was three drummers.
I'm sure there are some great young drummers these days, I'm just an old fart not familiar with them.

I was thinking more of my masterful abilities on the triangle...and the cowbell!!!

Nah...I would say that 4 or 5 years ago that I could out play most of these guys in marching percussion. I won't lie...I was good...like really good! ;)

lol...thanks! I was supposed to be a part of this snare line...but things "came up" and I wasn't able to join them in the summer! They finished 5th or 6th in the world that year in DCI competition...for those of you that know what DCI is!

it's not bad. However, that style of marching band (and percussion) is far different from the contemporary style. Their style is what was considered "mainstream" in the 60's and 70's...with some modifications.

I play guitar now-days, but the first instrument I learned was the drums...

I started playing drums for my bible-bangin' church when I was 10 and quit the group when I was around 14/15... every time I'm around a drum-set I have to ask if I can play, they just ask "Are you serious or are you just gunna bang on 'em" and they end up realizing I'm serious... drums are fun as hell... got to play a couple of songs with a cover-band about a month ago, that was cool...

Lars Ulrich of Metallica, btw
