Why do most teams seem afraid to kick a ball deep on a kickoff? Don't the coaches teach kick coverage anymore?

I guess to kick the ball to someone that doesn't usually handle the ball and then they might fumble!!! Other than that i would kick it deep all the time unless my coverage was absolutely horrible!!

SOme coaches would trade field position by squibbing, rather than give up a long return.....usually coaches squib or pooch if they do not have alot of speed

My how times haved changed.............I don't recall willingness having anything to do with being on kick off teams. It had more to with not running sprints and laps the rest of your days!!!!!!

Conditioning is a big part of special teams especially if you have starters on special teams!!!

What is really bad is to squib when you have a kicker that consistently kicks it into the endzone!

It really has nothing to do with teaching kids to cover or even kids unwillingness to do the job. I have talked with coaches about this and these are the reasons I have been given.

If you were to sit down and chart the avg starting position for most teams that kick deep it would be around the 30-35 yard line. This is due to lack of speed on the kickoff team or the lack of a kicker to kick it deep enough with enough hang time. You would also most likely find that they gave up a long return or TD somewhere in their season. So most coaches have taken the theory that you can pooch kick the ball to the 25-30 and force a fair catch or a quick tackle with the possible reward of a fumble recovery.

I was at a game last year where a Head Coach kicked right to the the oppisite team's best player the whole game!!! The first time the kid took it back something like 90 yards for a TD. And the team started their possesions at around the 45-50 the whole night, which IMO cost them the ball game b/c the coach of stubburn
