A large contingent from Gilmer goes every year. They make hundreds of yam pies, and promote the East Texas Yamboree. This is a county fair held in Gilmer each October.

We keep saying we're going to go, maybe this is the year we'll do it.. We went the summer of 1975 - seems like it was in August and about 110º. There is a lady from Cuero that goes every year and displays all sort of quilts she's made and canning and pickled items.

Stop by the Czech booth. I will be selling beer Fri eve, and Sat eve.

Mark your calendar for June 8,9,10, and 11th! San Antonio will celebrate the Texas Folklife Festival and the Bexar County Czech Heritage Society will be participating in this annual event.

Our booth is centered around Kolaches (pronounced Koh-lah-cheese) and one of our newly added attractions- a beer garden! Our entire booth and beer garden will be under an even larger tent. We are grateful for the continued support from the Gambrinus Co. for our tent.

The garden will be decorated with live plants, posters, tables, and chairs. Food is always a great way to start. Our food menu will consist of kolaches (of course), sausage/sauerkraut on a bun, sugar cookies, and pickles. Our drink menu will consist of Shiner Bock, Shiner Pilsner, Urquell Pilsner, soft drinks, tea, lemonade, and bottled water.

The highlight attraction is Susie Tolman’s painted egg display (Kraslice). Plan to spend some time with her and her daughter Noreen as they demonstrate their skills and let you try egg etching (Rejsky). Another crowd pleaser for both young and old is the marionette display and demonstration. Check the genealogy information and the posters that tell about famous Czechs such as the founder of McDonald’s (Ray Kroc) and Larry Bird (Petacek). On Sunday- Children’s Day- children can enjoy a new activity- coloring paper faces of Czech children wearing kroj headwear. The faces are then attached to wooden paint stirrers and used as fans. The back of the fan will contain information about the Bexar County Chapter, Czech Heritage Society of Texas.

We are looking forward to seeing YOU and YOUR FAMILY at our Czech booth for the 2006 Institute of Texan Cultures’ Folklife Festival. Bring your camera and take a souvenir picture of yourselves behind our new kroj cutout and anywhere in our festive tent!
