You are thinking about Lubbock Coronado, they are 5A.
There are two schools that are very close to Lubbock that are below 4A. Lubbock Cooper (3A) and Lubbock Roosevelt (2A).

I have said it before... but I really like Decatur to represent Region I. They have a good pitching staff, playoff experience, and a 4 year starter in Staley. I think that this is their year to make it to state. Iowa Park is a good test, but I don't think Iowa Park can hit as good as Decatur does, and Decatur is deeper on the bump than the Hawks.
Another good series out in Region I is Lubbock Cooper and Snyder. Everybody has forgot about Cooper and their run to state tournament last year. Cooper has had its ups and downs this season but are putting it back together at the right time.... playoff time. Should be a very good series in Andrews.

I'll do region 3 and 4, dont know enough about the other two regions.

Reg. 3

Hutto - Never mess with a Hippo
Bridge City - Ranked high all year
Gatesville - Beat the downlow friendly Bellville Brahmas
Huffman - Columbia beat 'em by 1 earlier...good baseball team!

Reg. 4

Sweeny - If Williams has 2 decent starts!
Sinton - Just want to see a Sweeny vs. Sinton matchup!
Columbia - Just to make a believer out of LH Panther Mom and Minks' 14 K's last outing!
Falfurrias - Never been as ready for a rematch before. Fal vs. Columbia in the regional semis...cant wait!

Hey VWG you should know that Decatur only had 3 hits in their first game of their series against Sanger...yea thats real good offense... And we have 2 kids that have been 4 year starters (Beals and Fulfer) and you don't know about playoff experience cuz we BEAT them last year and went two rounds deeper in the playoffs. So pretty much you don't know what the hell your talkin about!

Easy there iphawk! I don't think he was slamming Iowa Park. He is just stating his opinion and probably being a homer like most of us are on here. We all know the strengths of our team and are hoping those strengths carry us to the next round.

Wished I could be there this weekend. Got too much going on. Decatur/Iowa Park may be the best matchup of the weekend. Both teams have great records with some quality wins. Seen Iowa Park play 4 games this year in our tournament but have never seen Decatur play.

First off, I don't live in Wise County, didn't attend school there and have no allegiance to Decatur.
I go by their overall season record, and their ability to pitch and hit the ball.
Iowa Park has a good team, but after Gibson, Fulfer, Rusk, and maybe Smoak..... the sticks go hot and cold.
In my opinion...... the Eagles have better depth on the bump and also better sticks 1-9 than the Hawks do.
Crow will be served after this series. If it's on my plate so be it.........
I love the cocky high school attitude. Way to represent a great school with a great baseball reputation.

Yea, I was making plans to go on Monday. My brother and his family lives in Breckenridge and I needed to go spend some time with them. I was thinking I could do that and make the whole series in Graham but....I have to be in Lubbock on Friday and there is a wedding on Saturday I should attend. Not only would the series between Iowa Park/Decatur be great, I would enjoy meeting all of you guys as well.

once again vwg...u don't know anything about IP's hitting because u forget to mention Beals...i think i have already told u this once but Beals is batting like right at .400 and smoak may be batting .250. You can't say that Decatur's hitting is better when you don't even know about IP's hitting. All i know is that IP didn't get 3 hit in their last playoff series!

Interesting... I am getting hammered for not picking Iowa Park.
Never said they were a terrible team... very far from it. I think Iowa Park is a good team. I don't think, which is my opinion, that they are as good as last years Region I finalist team.
My bad, I forgot about Beals.... but again, in my opinion I think Decatur is better at the dish 1-9. I never said the Eagles have more playoff experience. I said Decatur HAS playoff experience, and I think that this is their year to get over the hump of the second round.

LOL. You're funny. However, do you know I have been pulling for Iowa Park all along? Saw them play 4 of their 5 games in our tournament and got to talk to Coach Fuhrman (sp?) and the assistant coach. Both were class acts. Fulfer was a fun kid to watch play--what a hustler. And being a Tech fan, I got to see Duggans (sp?) get into a couple of games--the big giant. Anyway, I became an Iowa Park fan that weekend.

Glad to hear it GWOOD. Fuhrman is a class act. One of the real good guys of HS athletics, period. Which assistant did you talk with, the tall one or the short, young one? The short young one is the oldest Swenson boy and the heir apparent to the head baseball job in IP as this is/was Fuhrman's probable final season. He's 3 or 4 years younger than me and was a great ballplayer in his own right. I had the pleasure of coaching him in summer league the summer after he graduated HS and we actually graduated college the same day. I'm proud to call him one of my friends. I've really thought hard about going back to school to get my teaching certificate and throwing my hat in the ring for one of the baseball assistant positions that will be coming open. Still undecided on that one.

Actually, GreenMonster was referring to something I did a month ago. He or someone asked who would I put in for a Region 1 Top 10 poll. I made one and put Decatur as the #1 team. Here's why:

1)At the time, they were 16-3 or 17-3. They had the best record in Region 1 except for Breckenridge but they had played a much tougher schedule than Breckenridge.

2)They had won two of the three tournaments they entered.

3)At the time their three losses all came in the Gulf Coast Invitational Tournament, full of 4A and 5A schools. Decatur was the only 3A team in the tournament. They went 1-3 there. So their only losses were to 4A and 5A schools.

4)Their win list included some 4A schools like Denison, Wichita Falls, Joshua, several 3A schools who were locks to make the playoffs--Crandall, Groesbeck, Sanger, West--and Denton Liberty Christian, a very good private school baseball team.

5)They scored a lot of runs in their games. At the time, they had only 3 games where they had scored less than 5 runs. This was seen as well in the Iowa Park series where they scored 29 runs in the 3 games.

6)Their run production comes from a lot of people. Like Iowa Park and Snyder, they hit well 1-9.

7)They dominated their district. 10-0 with only two close games--8-7 over Lake Worth and 4-1 over Bridgeport.

I have never seen Decatur play one game this year so my opinion just comes from "paper stats." There are other things to consider that I could not comment on-like pitching, defense, senior leadership, coaching, etc.

I'm pretty sure he was the shorter young one. I only remember one guy being with Fuhrman at the tournament.

Good luck on your decision about the teaching certificate.

I didn't ask the question---but thanks again for the excellent reply and analysis, GWood. Decatur is in our district, and I was not aware of a lot of the things about their team that you pointed out. I always appreciate a poster who makes a knowlegeable reply supported by unbiased facts on any team, in any sport, and I look forward to any additional insights you may be willing to offer on the teams remaining in the baseball playoffs. Thanks again for your continuing fine efforts in baseball reporting.

That is why I have no reason to doubt GWOOD, he is the most informed baseball poster Region I has here on the Downlow. He may be the most informed baseball poster period but I have to give Old Card his props too because that guy is an encyclopedia as well. If you want to know about 3A baseball talk to GWOOD or Old Card. Those guys are tops in my book.
