Snyder girls out in front
Shoot 325 for top spot in Class 3A; Breckenridge's Knight fires an 81

By Jacob Brown / brown@reporternews.com
May 12, 2006

AUSTIN - After the first round of the Class 3A UIL State Golf Championships at Jimmy Clay Golf Course on Thursday, the Snyder girls team is in the driver's seat with a three-stroke lead heading into today's final round of play beginning at 8 a.m.

Led by Chandra Alexander, the Lady Tigers shot a combined 325 while Yoakum is well within striking distance with a 328, and Longview Spring Hill sits in third place with a 341.

Alexander shot the lowest score of the team competitors with a 75, including a 36 on the front nine. She is tied for second place with medalist Katie Belser of Ingleside, and they are looking up the leader board at Sealy's Ashley Watkins, who shot an even-par 72.

''I was hitting the ball really good,'' Alexander said. ''I wasn't putting great, but whenever I was missing greens I could get up and down when I needed to. I'm going to work on my putting and hopefully my putting will be better, and I'll just try to make more putts and hit the ball like I did today.''

Putting was the common problem among the Snyder girls while other aspects of their game helped keep them in the lead, but coach Rocky Hunter said his team will have to improve on the greens to come away with the victory.

''I feel like 325, that's nothing to sneeze at. But at the same time, it could've been a little bit better. We left some putts out there,'' Hunter said. ''They're good ball strikers and they struck the ball well today. We just didn't putt well.''

While the Lady Tigers hope to improve in the second round, they do have two other golfers other than Alexander in the top 10 individually. Christi Williams is tied for sixth with an 80, and Ashley Luecke is tied for 10th with an 82.

Kelli Knight, a regional medalist from Breckenridge, is nine strokes behind the leader with an 81 after what she said was a disappointing round.

''I just couldn't ever quite get everything to work together,'' Knight said. ''My long putts never would fall for me, I could never make any birdies or anything and it just wasn't all there today. Hopefully some more of my putts will fall (in Round 2) and I'll be a little smoother.''
