Damion James, a highly regarded high school basketball player from Nacogdoches who signed with Oklahoma last November, has been released by the Sooners from his letter-of-intent.

Texas, which recruited the 6-foot-8-inch forward, is a candidate now to sign James, who also is looking at Arizona, Texas A&M and perhaps a few other schools.

James is one of three recruits who sought, and received, releases from Oklahoma after Sooners coach Kelvin Sampson left the school to become the head coach at Indiana. The others are 6-10 Jeremy Mayfield of Gulf Shores Academy in Houston and guard Scottie Reynolds of Herndon, Va.

Sampson was replaced by Jeff Capel, who left Virginia Commonwealth for OU.

The versatile, 225-pound James can play either forward position. He is rated as the 17th-best high school senior in the country by Rivals.com and No. 19 by Scout.com, two national recruiting services.

A&M is the big leader for James and will sign him if they can find room.
