Jasper ISD shuffles positions
By WILLIS WEBB Editor-Publisher

In keeping with recent efforts to reduce costs due to a loss of some funding and a student population reduction, Jasper Independent School District has announced its latest moves in shuffling administrative responsibilities.

Danny Lauve, Jasper High School head football coach, has taken on additional duties as JISD athletic director.

That announcement came Tuesday morning from JISD Superintendent Dr. Eddie Dunn after meetings with current athletic director and director of human resources Chris Coleman and other district personnel.

Lauve, who came to JHS in the spring of 2002, has compiled a four-season record of 42 wins and 13 losses. He led his teams to two Class 3A semifinals berths, a state finals and a bidistrict championship in that order.

Lauve, a native of Southeast Texas, came to Jasper from Plano East High School where he was defensive coordinator of a perennial Class 5A playoff team. After graduating from Lamar University, Lauve began his coaching career at Anahuac before moving to Groveton where he served on the staff of a state cham-pion. From there he went to Waxahachie and also coached on a state championship team.

"The overriding dynamic in this decision," Dunn said, "was to align Jasper from a Class 4A operation with 3,500 students to Class 3A with 2,900 enrollment.

"Secondly, the challenge of TAKS testing is becoming more and more prevalent."'

Dunn said in his one and one-half years at the JISD helm he has been putting together the best possible organization chart and assembling the best possible leadership team.

"Those decisions have been affected by some retirements and by the aftermath of Hurricane Rita," Dunn said.

Coleman, who has been athletic director since 1998, came to his native Jasper from Beaumont West Brook where he coached basketball. Over the past several years he's combined the AD duties with those of director of maintenance. Last year, after the retirement of assistant

superintendent and human resources director John "Bubba" Mixon, Coleman relinquished the maintenance job and took on the human resources post.

A graduate of Sam Houston State University with a bachelor of arts in physical education and history, Coleman completed work on a masters degree in the summer of 2003 and received his administrative certificaion.

Dunn said the director of human resources is a key position in any school district and that Coleman brings a positive impact to the job. "His knowledge of human resources and the personnel of this district, his knowledge of Jasper, his people skills and his code of behavior have served him and this district well," Dunn said.

These latest moves are part of a series of new assignments designed, Dunn says, to get maximum effectiveness to a trimmed down administrative staff to fit 3A needs.

As for Lauve's qualifications to add the AD duties,

Dunn said, "He loves the kids and cares about all sports. Coach Lauve is committed to quality and to all of the kids. This allows us to use him more effectively at the 3A level."

Dunn said Lauve has strong character and is a team player.

In addition, JISD will realize some cost savings with the reshuffling in the athletic department coaching ranks. A net savings of $70,000 will be realized with Lauve taking on additional duties and with one coach retiring and one teaching position, held by the retiring coach, being filled by current staff members with no new hire.

"We're going to use our resources in smarter ways," Dunn said. "We want to be cost effective and good stewards of the people's tax dollars.

"While we're not perfect, we do have people who can handle and solve any problem that might arise and we have an administrative team that works well together for the kids."

That is correct. Coach Lauve had not been the AD.

They were 4a as stated, and it isn't uncommon for 4A schools to have ADs who aren't the head football coach.
