Texans narrow choice to two players, not Young

By KRISTIE RIEKEN, AP Sports Writer
April 26, 2006

HOUSTON (AP) -- The Houston Texans will take Southern Cal running back Reggie Bush or North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams with the first pick in Saturday's draft, general manager Charley Casserly said Wednesday.

The Texans dashed the hopes of University of Texas fans everywhere who have been clamoring for the team to pick Vince Young, a Houston native who led the Longhorns to a Rose Bowl victory over Bush and USC.

"We came to the conclusion that to draft a quarterback, whether it be Vince Young, Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler, was not the best thing for this football team," Casserly said. "The best thing for this football team was to use the first pick in this draft to add a premier player at another position."

Casserly said that part of their decision-making process involved contacting other teams to see if there was any interest in trading for their pick.

"Right now we have nobody interested in that first pick, so we have gone ahead and begun negotiations with two players," Casserly said.

You heard it here. Not taking Vince Young is going to go down as one of the biggest blunders of this draft. A few years from now ESPN classics will show a segment You Can't Blame the Texans for not Drafting Vince Young. Well this is being pointed out well before the draft. Sad day for Houston. Nothing aginst Reggie though. :(

The Texans have a QB, they need an impact player in another position or they will pick #1 again next year. Casserly will be unemployed!!!

Casserly reminds me of that Boston GM that traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees for $100,000 which proved to be the biggest goofs ever. It wasn't because of the money but he could also have got at least two and probably even three good players also. The Boston owners trusted him completely but he stabbed them in the back because shortly after the trade he left them and became the GM of the Yankees which raised a few eyebrows. He was trusted and he left a great team in ruin.

The Texans QB is worthless. Has not shown the ability to win or that he is even a mediocre QB so far.

Kinda hard when you're on your back most of the time.

They showed promise two years ago, and that was without a decent OL. But a unit that gave up over 40 sacks in '04 had some injuries last year, so the backups of those franchise talents were "protecting" (and I use that term loosely) David Carr.

I'M RIGHT!!! HAHAHAAAA

*does the running man*

I am the greatest.

David Carr doesn't suck. You'll see in time. A QB works with what he has, and I think this next year his stats will go up exponentially. Just you watch. Reggie Bush and David Carr alot with a decent o-line and a good coaching staff will make the Texans a fairly decent Team.

I sure can call 'em.

Dude...you didn't call anything...everybody knew they weren't going to take Vince Young for the last two months. Also, Carr's #'s from last year don't have anywhere to but up (except his sack numbers which we think can only go down!). This isn't exactly rocket science that you used to come to this conclusion since everybody else already knew the same stuff!

I'm not going to go off on the deep end and call Carr the next Brett Favre, but he has the potential to be a very good NFL QB.

Here are his stats during his career.

Year Team G GS Att Comp Pct Yards YPA Lg TD Int Tkld 20+ 40+ Rate
2002 Houston Texans 16 16 444 233 52.5 2592 5.84 81 9 15 76/411 31 5 62.8
2003 Houston Texans 12 11 295 167 56.6 2013 6.82 78 9 13 15/90 22 5 69.5
2004 Houston Texans 16 16 466 285 61.2 3531 7.58 69 16 14 49/301 47 6 83.5
2005 Houston Texans 16 16 423 256 60.5 2488 5.88 53 14 11 68/424 18 2 77.2
TOTAL 60 59 1628 941 57.8 10624 6.53 81 48 53 208/1226 118 18 73.7

02- 76 Sacks
03- 36 Sacks
04- 49 Sacks
05- 68 Sacks

The only year in which that line was halfway decent (but STILL gave up almost 40 sacks) was '03. The next year, even though he was sacked 49 times, Carr still threw for 3500 yards. Not bad, even with 14 picks.

But since '02, only three teams have given up more than 54 sacks in a year. The only one that didn't hurt David Carr any more than the flashbacks was the '04 Bears. Bottom line: the Texans haven't broke out of the bottom 10 in the league in sacks allowed since their inception. Carr's been on the receiving end of almost every single one. We don't know anything about the guy except he's a tough kid who's been knocked around a lot and that he's starting to get skiddish.

If they're smart, Casserly will do everything in his power to protect his $10M investment. Unfortunately, it seems more and more like they're not. I'd rather have substance over style any day of the week, but 84% of America (according to ESPN Sports Nation) wouldn't.

I think Casserly will be unemployed by seasons start anyway.

Good call by the Texans. Young would not have been a wise pick for this team.

that draft board is just rediculous

drop D'Brick to #4...
Move the others up one...

Why would Detroit get another target to throw to?

Chad Jackson might not make it past the top 10

Marcus Vick to the Bears?! Are you flippin kidding me?! Take a Drew Olsen or a Brody Croyle instead... Hell, give me Texas State's Nealy...

Never said all of you were idiots guy, I stated a fact. I was right. You can be right too but there were alot of people that said VY would/should go to Houston.

So there you go. I rested my case with that post.

So there was no room for argument or contestation. Therefore any point you made in regaurd to my post is hereby void and should be stricken from your count.

;) Besides I was kidding.

It's all good :D
