Palestine wins seventh straight district golf title

TRINITY — The Palestine golf program continued to flex its muscle Monday as the Wildcats won a district golf tournament for the seventh straight year.
“We have started a tradition in winning district titles and each group of kids do not want to let that go,” Palestine golf coach Tommy Allison said. “And we have good young ones coming up to continue that tradition for years to come.”
The Palestine Wildcats won the District 21-3A golf tournament at Westwood Shores Golf Course by 69 strokes Monday and for the second straight year, Palestine’s “B” took second. Both teams will advance to the Class 3A-Region III golf tournament in Brenham Country Club on April 26 and 27.
The Palestine “A” team finished with a two-round total of 576 after a 289 Monday. The Palestine “B” team shot a 325 Monday and a 645 overall to hold off Crockett, who finished 10 strokes behind.
“It just shows the quality and depth of our golf program at Palestine,” Allison said of both teams making regionals.
Another streak continued for Palestine was having one of its own win the tournament as Jacob Taylor took first place with a two-day total of 141. Taylor, who shot a 70 Monday, is the fourth different Wildcat golfer in the last four years to win the district golf tournament.
“Jacob was very steady, which he has been all year long,” Allison said. “I am sure proud of the way he played.”
Palestine’s top four golfers finished in the top five at district. Joseph Totah and Jeremy Lambright finished in a three-way tie for second place with Crockett’s Cannon Earp at 143, forcing a playoff.
Earp won the playoff while Totah, who shot a 72 Monday, finished third and Lambright, who shot a 71 Monday, took fourth place.
Palestine’s Steve Herrington finished fifth with a 149 after shooting a 76 Monday. The Palestine “A” team’s fifth golfer Chris Lee shot a 89 Monday and 186 for the tournament.
“Getting all four in the top five shows that these kids are focused to make another run at the state title,” Allison said. “We have taken care of the first goal and now our minds are set to take care of the regional tournament.”
Along with getting four of the Palestine “A” golfers in the top five, as a whole Palestine had 10 golfers in the top 10.
Playing on the Palestine “B” team, Austin Anderson took eighth place as he shot a 76 Monday for a total of 153.
Nicholas Varela, who shot a 78 Monday and 160 overall, finished ninth and Kyle Woodard finished 10th as he shot an 83 Monday and a 163 total.
The other Palestine “B” team golfers were JC Johnson, who shot an 88 Monday, and a 170 total and Taylor Carnes, who has a 97 Monday and a total of 180.
Playing as a medalist, Palestine’s Cameron Bunt finished with a two-day total of 197 after a 101 Monday.
