AUSTIN, Texas -- Although the Longhorns brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mavericks worked out of the jam as No. 6 Texas lost a tough 6-3 decision to UT-Arlington in front of 4,717 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday, April 11.
The Horns’ (24-12) loss to the Mavericks (15-20) marked the team’s third defeat in the last 12 games and only their second at home this season.

After UT starter Joey Parigi (Monterey, Calif.) worked out of a first and third with one out situation in the top of the first, UT-Arlington came right back with a two-out rally in the second to grab a 5-0 lead. With runners again on the corners and two outs, Daniel Rieder singled in one run before an error was followed by a two-run double off the bat of Adam Moore and a Justin Stevens' base hit to plate four unearned scores. Immediately countering in the bottom of the frame, Bradley Suttle (Boerne, Texas) singled in front of a two-out double by Jordan Danks (Round Rock, Texas) to pull Texas within 5-1. One inning later, Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) and Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas) both reached on two-out singles before pulling off a double steal, which resulted in a throwing error to score Stubbs and make it a 5-2 game.

A two-out single with two runners on in the fourth from Danny Slinkman then returned the Mavericks' lead to four at 6-2. Following a scoreless fifth and sixth for both sides, the Horns would threaten in the bottom of the seventh with two on and no outs, but UTA reliever Nathan Long set down his next three batters in order to keep the four-run lead in tact. While four UT relievers held the Mavericks to three hits between the fifth and ninth, Texas’ offense had one last chance in the ninth to rally. After putting two runners on with two outs, Stubbs delivered his fourth hit of the game to bring in one run and make it a 6-3 contest. The Longhorns then brought the tying run to the plate, but UT-Arlington reliever Chris Taylor induced a hard-hit grounder to third that ended the ballgame. While UTA starter Kyle Gainley, who allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out four over six innings, earned his first win of the year, Parigi shouldered the loss for Texas during his first career start.

The duo of Stubbs and Kainer combined for six of Texas’ nine hits on the evening. While Stubbs tied a career-best with his second four-hit game in as many contests while scoring one run and driving in another, Kainer went 2-for-5. UT-Arlington, meanwhile, had its 11-hit attack paced by Moore, who went 3-for-3 with one run scored and a pair of RBI, and the tandem of Rieder and Stevens, who each posted two-hit outings while combining for one run scored and three RBI. Of additional note for UT, Kainer extended his current hit streak to a season-long six games and Keith Shinaberry (Austin, Texas) made his first career pitching appearance for the Horns and tossed two innings of shutout relief.

Up next, the Horns open a three-game conference series against No. 24 Baylor on Thursday, April 13 at 7 p.m. Central. Notably, while the Friday game will be played at the Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas, the Saturday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.) contests will be held at Disch-Falk Field in Austin, Texas, and be televised by CSTV. To purchase tickets for the games on Saturday and Sunday, which are presented by UFCU and State Farm Insurance, respectively, call by phone (1-800-982-BEVO) or go to TexasBoxOffice.com.

This series against Baylor should be a good one!

A guy named Parigi pitched. He didn't make it out of the second inning, though it wasn't entirely his fault. Of the 5 runs that came in the second, only ONE was earned.

Still, a loss is a loss, and the bats just weren't working for the 'Horns tonight.

Thats ok. I bet Aggie baseball can top that. We are absolutely pitiful. We lost to Texas St. last night 5-1 at Olsen. Not fun times for Aggie Baseball.:(

It's all about gaining momentum and playing your best ball when the playoffs roll around. The Horns still have a good team. Augie seems to find a way to motivate and get the best out of his players come post season.

When 30% production on offense is considered good funny things can happen in the outcomes of Baseball.
