Grand slam lifts Columbia over Sweeny, 5-3

Devin Fletcher hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, propelling the Columbia Roughnecks to a 5-3 win at Sweeny on Wednesday night.

Shane Minks picked up the win for the Roughnecks, pitching seven innings. He struck out seven and walked four, while giving up three runs on four hits.

Blake Williams took the loss for the Bulldogs, also going the distance. He struck out nine and walked five, while giving up five runs on five hits.

Blake Gupton was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Columbia (3-0 in District 25-3A). Kyle Nairn was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Ryan Follett was 1-for-2 to lead Sweeny (1-2 in district).

Columbia next plays Palacios at noon Saturday, while Sweeny travels to Wharton for a 2 p.m. game.

I think Columbia's girls could beat the boys, especially if they played them at Lamar Consolidated. Just kidding. To both roughneck teams...good wins, it's always nice to beat Sweeny.
