Breckenridge??? WOW!!! 2 or 3 years ago I called a lot of their 13-14 yr old games so those kids would be juniors and seniors now. They could hit the ball ok but didn't have much to speak of in terms of pitching. They must have some seniors that are playing out their minds all of a sudden because there wasn't enough talent in their lower grades to warrant a #8 state ranking unless something drastic has changed.

Hamshire-Fannett #5? They will probably lose 2 this weeek with west orange and bridge city. Then they have hardin-jefferson for a 3rd loss in a row next week. Enjoy the top ten.

THSBCA continues to lose credibility on the 3A level and below. They seem to be knowledgeable about 5A & 4A, but they must just be looking at W/L records in the smaller schools. If you look at Breckenridge's schedule, their 13 (not 12) wins consists of a lot of 2A schools and several 3A schools who have .500 W/L records or worse. The best team they have played is Iowa Park and they lost that game.

Give Breckenridge their due. They have really stepped it up this year and they came close to beating a good Iowa Park team (5-4) but a Top 10 team?...I don't think so. Probably a Top 40 team or maybe even a Top 30 team.

To win 13 out of 14 games you have to be playing good, fundamental baseball regardless of the talent of your opponents...but it doesn't mean that are a top notch team either.

I knew their record, but didn't think it'd get them top 10. I was expecting more of a top 20 ranking. While it does seem kind of odd that they appeared there, don't take anything away from the team. It's difficult to win 12 out of 13 games any time, especially in a program that has rarely accrued a .500 record in the past few years. Instead of criticizing the THBSCA, why not take it for it is and know that there's still a lot to play, and just like the NCAA basketball polls, the top 10 usually plays its way back to normal. It's great for the program and especially the players, who have had to work especially hard to get the losing reputation out the door. They deserve a confidence boost like that.

I don't know much about the players, but I do know Heatley, the qb from last year who signed to play ball somewhere (cant remember off top of my head), is the no.1 pitcher, and his arm strength has tremendously increased the past couple of years.

I wonder if he can control a baseball any better than a football? I won't doubt his arm strength because it's excellent...but he's kind of like Ebby Calvin 'Nuke' LaLoosh (from Bull Durham)...all the talent in the world but he's got to learn to reign it in!

I think Decatur should be close to the top 10...not because I am from Decatur but because they have a 12-3 record and have played in 5A-4A tourneys and have yet to lose to any 3A schools so far....IMO. Oh and there 3 losses came to Top 10 teams in 4A ranks.

HAHA. That's a great comparison. Apparently Crash Davis is coaching, I really don't know, or the kid's staying at some madam's house now. Heatley will now forever be known, though, as Nuke.

Hamshire-Fannett lost a 5-4 game to Silsbee (9-6) in February. I don't know who Barbers Hill lost to.

HF deserves their rankings at this point. They have several quality wins. The first 3 district games will tell us just how good they really are.

BH lost to WO-S 3-0. WO-S' Sparks pitched the shutout and hit a 3 run homer.

Rankings never mean anything unless they are used to seed the playoffs/tournament. Just discussion points..

How's your team doing?

I totally agree. I hope the Breckenridge team is excited about being in the top ten for the first time in possibly ever, but they should know that it won't mean anything come playoff time, or even during the district schedule.

At the very least the rankings spark discussion for us, and for the towns excitement.

You must have never seen teams like Rice and Palacios play.
In three years we beat them a combined 112 to 9 in 6 games.

So what are you saying? I was saying that a team that WINS a good # of games doesn't mean that they are a top level team. Yeah yall could play Rice and Palacios 9 times a piece and then play Bridge City one time and lose 14-2 and deserve to be a top 10 team because you have an 18-1 record.

I would rather be unranked and playing good baseball going into the playoffs than to have my kids see that fancy ranking that a bunch of guys that have never seen us play gave to us. I've been on a Cinderella team. The looks on their faces after you whip their butt is priceless. In 1993 we knocked off the #1 in area, the #4 in regional semis, and then the #3 in the Region I finals. It was GREAT. Sitting behind home plate in the bottom of the 7th inning with all 1500 IP fans chanting "28 and 1! 28 and 1! 28 and 1!" just as we were putting the finishing touches on Canyon is one of those little moments in time that I can recall every single detail.
