Helicopters taking part in Operation Swarmer take off Thursday morning in Iraq's Salaheddin province northeast of Samarra.

The air offensive –- the largest air assault in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion three years ago, according to the U.S. military -- is a combined U.S.-Iraqi effort to clear the area of insurgents. It involves more than 1,500 troops, 200 vehicles and 50 aircraft, the military said.
