View Full Version : What do you consider the greatest decades of music for the past 50 years?

I myself am partial to 80's music as that is what I mainly grew up listening to. I think with the electronic sound becoming more affluent and cheaper during this decade, musicians had new means to create different sounds. Also the 80's were somewhat more innocent in themes and was just considered fun.
I also like music from the 50's. New rock and country pioneers from the time explored avenues considered non-PC at the time and paved the way for what is now modern rock.
Please list your reasons. All answers are welcome.:)

I grew up with the songs of the 60's and 70's and still like them. But I was a teenager in the early 80's and have more memories of the music of that time.

Plus, I was a headbanger and the 80's was the decade of the big hair bands!!:D

ROCK ON!!!

What do you consider the greatest decades of music for the past 50 years?
I thought about that FOFO. The romantic period around the turn of the century is pretty darn good imho too. Also when JPS was around is tops but I was trying to keep it within our lifetimes.;)

Early seventies was great. If you're meaning seventies music was terrible after 1975, I agree 100%, bull. The disco scene in late 70's was a time in music most of us would like to forget. Although there are probably some ladies now in their forties who enjoyed watching Travolta move around in his tight pants.

My husband was ALL about disco. Picture this....1975, his Sr. prom....purple leisure suit and white platform shoes. His words...he was "stylin". Funny how he doesn't have any pictures.

Believe it or not, I can actually picture it. I had a powder blue leisure suit with blue shoes. No pictures either tho.

I agree with 66 in the bridge gap between 60s and 70s but I was shocked to see not one person voted on the 50s and it was Elvis hit single Hound Dog Man in 1956 that really started rock and role. If I had known that I would have voted for the 50s to give them one vote.

Well, with that being said, I absolutely loved Elvis and I also loved the Beach Boys.

Back then, I hated country music....but that is what I listen to more than anything now....Texas Country!!

LOL! I love Nickelback & have a couple of their CD's. # 55 was quite surprised to know I actually owned something that wasn't Boston, AC/DC, Queen, etc. When we were on the way to Kingsville, I was singing along with something on the radio. He had the  look on his face and asked, "You know this song???". (It was a Green Day song...)

If I had to pin it down to 10 years (decade), I would say 65-75 was the best "10 years" of rock n roll.

I was fortunate to have a sister that is 10 years older than me. As a result I was turned on to some of that good 70's rock at an early age (KISS, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Ted Nugent, etc.). In fact she gave me an 8-track of "Hotel California" for my 9th birthday. So I like that music but then I'm also partial to the 80's stuff that was big in jr. high and HS (U2, Van Halen, Rush, The Cure, The Police, etc.), so as a result I'd say the time between 1974-1989 was pretty good in my mind.

I think that while some of us that were teenagers in the late 60's and early 70's really appreciated the changes that came about because of Elvis and other artist from the 50's, we considered the music of the 50's to be somewhat cute and nice, but a bit tame for our taste, considering what was being placed on our plates at the time. While I will always consider Elvis the King, I somehow have a hard time picturing him on the stage at Woodstock. :D

While I grew up in the late 60's and early 70's (do we ever really stop growing up between 15 and 30? ;) ), I also had the pleasure of going back to college at SWT in the early 80's and enjoyed the early days of MTV and the artist that made it such a success.

I also like a rock band from a few years back called Matchbox 20.

Disco killed all good music... i'd had to go with the 60's, early 70's or 90's. These were all happy music with great messages whether it be political or not. What happened to happiness in music? Listen to any rock today and you'll understand why i ask that

Personally, I consider the Golden Age of music between 1966 to 1973.

The reason I feel that way may have been high school, and my time in the military.

Hmmmmm.....I have thought about this one for awhile, and while I was a teenager in the 70's, it looks like I enjoyed the 80's music more.

Never have been a fan of the hard rock stuff, but always did (and still do) enjoy what was called "new wave" music back then i.e. The Cars, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, B-52's, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Billy Idol etc.....

Now, Country is my preference...:D

most popular music today is horrible. The 90's tried to create music with the influences of older music within the sounds of thirdeyeblind, blind melon, matchbox 20, eve 6. It was contemporary music with alot of influences from the 65 to 75 range. I do agree that disco killed the 70's, but what were the guys thinkin in the 80's with the hair? lol.. Good music came out of the 80's, but a great deal of bad stuff came out as well. for example, video killed the radio star, the locomotion, new kids on the block.. enough said.. Music today that is popular in the emo/screamo scene does not take that much talent to produce. Texas music today reinverts more of the old rock'n'roll than the millineum's rock music. hopefully in a few years the 60's influence will come back in rock, but i highly doubt it. Just pass the mic and scream and you got yourself a hit
