Keenum adds 4-3A basketball MVP trophy to one in football

Football or basketball, it doesn't matter.

Less than three months after being named District 4-3A's Most Valuable Player in football, Wylie's Case Keenum received the same honor for basketball after leading the Bulldogs to the regional finals.

''That's great,'' he said. ''Just like football, there are a lot of good players and good teams in our district. We had to beat Clyde to get to regionals, and Sweetwater won a playoff game. So there was a lot of talent in our district, and it's definitely an honor.''

Keenum missed the early part of his senior season while guiding the football team through the state playoffs, where he suffered a shoulder injury in Wylie's final game. An ankle injury forced Keenum to miss more time, but he managed to hit his stride by the time district play rolled around.

The versatile senior averaged 15.5 points per game in district play, helping the Bulldogs win the 4-3A title with a perfect 8-0 record.

Keenum, who played all five positions at some point during the season, bettered that average to 16 points per game during the playoffs, as the Bulldogs fell 50-49 to Carrollton Ranchview in the regional final. Even with the playoff run, Keenum said there isn't one specific memory that sticks out above the rest.

''I was with a great group of guys, and every day was a memory,'' he said.

Fellow Bulldog Michael Strong was named the district's Defensive MVP after guarding the opponent's best perimeter player throughout the season. He was a unanimous selection for the distinction.

''I was pretty surprised when coach told me,'' Strong said. ''It's just a reflection of our team and coach (Russell) Perkins teaching us where to be at the right time.''

Perkins was named the district's Coach of the Year following Wylie's 29-3 season.

All five Wylie starters received recognition, as juniors Gary Edwards and Jeff Wilkerson joined senior Adam Sisneros on the All District team. Wylie reserve guard Cody English was named to the All Defensive team.

Clyde's Jacob Agnew, Luke Hawk and Blake Watts - all seniors - were named to the All-District team following Clyde's 26-7 season. Clyde senior Brandt Poulin was an All-Defensive selection.

Sweetwater, the district's other playoff team, also put a trio of players on the All-District squad. Seniors Kendal Carrillo, Eric Emerson and Brittan Pittman all got selected. Duone Cunnings represented the Mustangs on the defensive team.

Tagaba Kyei was Snyder's lone All-District selection. Merkel's Trevor Hobbs was on the All-Defensive team, and Merkel junior Matt Gabaldon was named Newcomer of the Year.
